HEAD COACH NORT THORTON: Nort Thornton is celebrating his silver anniversary as the men's swimming coach at the University of California as he is in his 25th season leading the Golden Bears. Thornton, the dean of the Pacific-10 Conference swimming coaches, has a career dual meet record of 183-73 (.715) and is enjoying the 1998-99 campaign as Cal returns 17 letterwinners and five All-Americans from a squad that finished eighth at the 1998 NCAA Championship.

NOTING THE BEARS: Leading the Bears at the Pac-10 Championship was junior Ratapong Sirisanont (Bangkok, Thailand), who won the conference title and broke the school record in the 200 breast (1:57.04). Sirisanont also won the 400 individual medley (3:48.63). Other top performers for Cal included junior Bart Kizierowski (Warsaw, Poland) winning the 50 free (19.70), and senior Gordan Kozulj (Zagreb, Croatia) capturing the 200 individual medley (1:47.74). The Bears are also the 1999 conference champions in the 200 free relay (1:19.00, Dan Lindstrom, Will Moore, Kizierowski, Matt Macedo), and they broke the school record in the 400 medley relay (3:11.42, Kozulj, Andrew Chan, Lindstrom, Kizierowski), placing second. Cal's four individual conference titles were the Bears most individual titles since 1985.

SCHOOL RECORDS: Three school records were broken by Cal this season. Besides Sirisanont setting a new record in the 200 breast and the 400 medley relay record being broken, Kizierowski set a Bear dual meet record in the 50 free Feb. 20 versus Stanford. He swam a time of 19.90, which broke the previous record of 20.12 set by Olympic gold medalist Matt Biondi versus Texas Nov. 16, 1986 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
