About Cal Bears Read & Patrick Laird's Summer Reading Challenge

Cal Athletics and Cal Football Alum, Patrick Laird '18, have partnered together to inspire and encourage kids to read more during the summer months.

The Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge is a FREE reading program designed for grades TK- 6th to earn incentives as they read this summer! Sign up here or to learn more about the Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge click here.

The Cal Bears Reading program will relaunch as a challenge mid August 2019 for kids to earn incentives, like tickets to home Cal Football, Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball games.
 

The Challenge

  • TK - 2nd Grade: Read at least 4 books this summer and receive (4) four tickets to Cal Football’s home opener vs. UC Davis August 31
  • 3rd Grade - 6th Grade: Read at least 6 books this summer and receive (4) four tickets to Cal Football’s home opener vs. UC Davis August 31

How It Works

Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge
  1. Parents & Guardians sign up your child to join the challenge!
  2. After signing up, parents/guardians will receive a summer reading journal via email. The Journal will serve as an official voucher to redeem your free tickets. 
  3. After completing the challenge and filling out the journal, kids and their families can turn it in to the Cal Athletics Ticket Office to receive their (4) four complementary tickets. NOTE: Additional tickets may be purchased alongside the (4) four complementary tickets received for completing the challenge.
  4. After the summer challenge is completed stay tuned for a Bears Read Challenge to earn more Cal Football and other Cal sporting event tickets!
 

Rewards & Incentives

Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge
  • Upon completing the summer reading challenge children will receive (4) four complimentary tickets to Cal Football’s home opener vs. UC Davis - August 31. Tickets are redeemable at the Cal Athletics Ticket Office.
  • Additional tickets may be purchased alongside the complimentary tickets.
  • Households with multiple children who complete the challenge will be awarded (2) two additional ticket per additional participant.
