Alec Sundly Joins Men's Soccer Staff

Former Cal men's soccer player Alec Sundly, 28, returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach in 2020.

A midfielder for the Golden Bears from 2010-13, Sundly played professionally after leaving Berkeley. The New England Revolution drafted him 12th (31st overall) in the second round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, and he was most recently with California United Strikers FC in the NISA (National Independent Soccer Association). He also played for FCA Darmstadt in Germany and with the Rochester Rhinos and the Real Monarchs in the USL.

Sundly was a member of two Cal squads - in 2010 and 2013 - that reached the NCAA quarterfinals. He tallied nine goals and two assists as a co-captain for the 2013 team, which spent several weeks ranked No. 1. Also in his final season, Sundly earned All-Pac-12 second-team selection and claimed Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention. Overall, Sundly scored 14 goals and three assists in 73 games (including 55 starts) for the Bears.
