Berkeley, Calif. -
Defense was the name of the game as No. 2 UCLA (9-4, 1-2) held on for a 4-3 victory over No. 3 California (9-4, 2-2) Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) contest. Junior driver Attila Banhidy led the Cal charge with two goals on the day.
UCLA's defense and the play of senior goalie Brandon Brooks kept the Bears in check throughout most of the game. Brooks tallied nine saves on the afternoon, while facing a Cal attack that bombarded the Bruin net with 28 shots on goal, but scoring just three.
Bruin Sophomore Brett Ormsby started the scoring, finding the back of the net for the game's first point with 23 seconds remaining in the first period. As was to be expected between the nation's #2 and #3-ranked teams, defense dominated the first half of play as neither squad would scratch the scoreboard for the rest of the first half. UCLA went into the break with the 1-0 lead.
Ormsby hit is second of three goals just 1:50 into the third period, extending the Bruin lead to 2-0. But Cal would make a game of it as Banhidy scored the first of his two goals at the 3:11 mark to cut the Bruin lead in half. Chris Lathrop knotted the score at 2-2 with 34 seconds remaining to make for an exciting fourth period.
Two more UCLA scores in the first three minutes of the fourth period left Cal scrambling for instant offense. The opportunities were there, as a full press led to a multitude of shots, but the Bears' couldn't find the back of the net until Banhidy tallied his team-high 26th goal of the year as time expired. It was too little too late as the Bears dropped the match, 4-3, falling to 2-2 in MPSF action while the Bruins improved to 1-2.
Cal will host UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
