BERKELEY, CA - The No. 1 ranked California men's water polo team (12-3) defeated No. 12 UC Davis (9-7), 8-3, and No. 17 Air Force (9-6), 14-5, in a doubleheader Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
In the match against the Air Force, the Bears pulled away from a 6-3 halftime advantage by outscoring the Falcons, 6-0, in the third period. Leading scorer for Cal in the Air Force match were senior Attila Banhidy with four goals and freshman Andrija Vasiljevic with three goals. Sophomore goalie Nate Bennett finished with nine saves, including five saves in the first period.
Cal received goals from six different players in the third period - freshman Brian Bacharach, senior Beau Schuster, freshman Brian Kinsel, Banhidy, freshman Dan Werner and junior Joe Born.
Against the UC Davis Aggies, Cal was led by Vasiljevic's three goals, and two goals from Banhidy. Redshirt freshman Kinsel and seniors Greg Panawek and Will Quist also tallied scores for the Bears. Senior goalie Tim Kates finished with six saves.
Greg Dingeldei scored a pair of goals for UC Davis. Cal outscored the Aggies, 3-0 in the first period on goals by Kinsel, Banhidy and Vasiljevic. Banhidy's goal came on a four-meter penalty shot, drawn by Kinsel. The two teams scored a goal apiece in the second and third periods, but the Bears pulled away, outscoring UC Davis, 3-1, in the fourth period. Quist scored on an outstanding assist from Panawek, and Vasiljevic and Banhidy recorded their third and second goals, respectively, of the match.
The Bears will next face a pair of MPSF foes, visiting No. 5 ranked UCLA, Saturday, Oct. 18 (time TBA) and No. 3 ranked Pepperdine, Sunday, Oct. 19 at 12 p.m.
