The No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (14-1) powered past No. 19-ranked Cal Baptist, 23-5, Sunday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. Thirteen different players scored for the Golden Bears, led by four goals by senior center Brian Kinsel, and three goals apiece by senior Brian Bacharach, junior Jeff Tyrrell and sophomore Trent Calder. Junior goalie Mark Sheredy had six saves in the third and fourth periods, and sophomore goalie Marc Vacquier had three saves, including blocking a five-meter penalty shot in the second period.
Another top player for Cal was redshirt freshman Spencer Warden, who tallied two goals with three steals, three assists and forced one ejection. Junior All-American Michael Sharf paced the Bears with four steals and Andrija Vasiljevic, Warden, Frank Reynolds and Mike Hayes had three assists apiece. Cal scored on 23 of 39 shots on goal.
Cal Baptist had scored the matches' first goal on a Ryan Steiger shot off an assist from Mike Looy with 6:26 left in the first period. From there, it was all Cal as the Bears scored eight straight goals before Looy scored for the Lancers with 5:46 left in the second period. John Miller finished with 10 saves for Cal Baptist.
The Bears will next host No. 6 Stanford in the Big Splash, Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
