No. 2 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 19-6

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Powered by four goals from junior Jeff Tyrrell, and three goals apiece from senior John Mann and junior Michael Sharf, the No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (21-3, 4-1 MPSF) defeated No. 7-ranked UC Santa Barbara (16-11, 1-3 MPSF) Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears, which had 10 different players score during the afternoon, were also led by seniors Andrija Vasiljevic and Marty Matthies, who notched two goals apiece. Junior goalie Mark Sheredy finished with six saves.

After Sharf scored Cal's first goal on a five-meter penalty shot with 3:50 left in the first period, the Gauchos' Stefan Partelow was able the contest on a counterattack goal with 2:10 remaining in the first. But, that was as close as UC Santa Barbara would get as the Bears went on a 5-0 run at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second period behind goals from senior Brian Bacharach, Tyrrell, Sharf, Matthies and Mann.

Cal proceeded to go on a 6-0 run, a 5-0 run, and scored seven goals during the fourth period, on the way to the 19-6 win. Other scorers for the Gauchos included two goals by Ross Sinclair and goals by Alex Young, Miles Price and Tamas Donauer. Goalie Rick Wright tallied seven saves.

Sharf led the Bears with three steals, juniors Mike Hayes and Zac Monsees paced Cal with three assists apiece, and Mann and senior center Brian Kinsel each had three ejections earned. Junior Adam Haley led the Bears with two field blocks. Cal was 19-for-29 on shots on goal, and was 4-for-5 on 6-on-5 advantages. The Bears held UCSB to 1-for-5 on man-up advantages.

Cal will next host No. 3-ranked UCLA at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 4 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
