The No. 1-ranked California men's water polo team won its final two matches of the Navy Open to conclude the two-day tournament 5-0, defeating No. 17-ranked Bucknell, 14-5; and host Navy, 13-3, Sunday at the LeJeune Hall Pool on the Navel Academy campus. Cal had topped St. Francis, 17-9; Johns Hopkins, 15-4; and MIT, 21-2, on Saturday. A top performer for the Bears over the weekend was senior Brian Kinsel, who concluded the tournament with 10 goals, three assists and three steals.
Versus No. 13-ranked Navy, Cal was led by seniors Kinsel and John Mann with three goals apiece, while junior Jeff Tyrrell and freshman Spencer Warden added two goals each. Kinsel had forced four ejections during the match while the top-ranked Bears held the Midshipmen to 1 for 15 on 6-5 attempts. Sophomore goalie Marc Vacquier had a career-high 16 saves with one steal and one assist. Junior Adam Haley topped the Bears with two steals and Zac Monsees had a team-high three assists.
In the Sunday morning victory over Bucknell, junior Michael Sharf paced Cal with four goals and Kinsel added three scores. Tyrrell chipped in two goals and junior goalie Mark Sheredy had four saves and three assists in three quarters. Sophomore Matt Hillard came in in the fourth quarter to record two saves with a steal. Freshman Mike Sample added three steals for the Bears.
Cal has now gone 12-0 in three years competing at the Navy Open. The Bears next action is Thursday, Sept. 7 versus Pacific at 4 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal then hosts UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex, before entertaining an Alumni squad at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
