ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Highlighted by a variety of strong performances, the California men's track and field team took third place and the Golden Bears women were fourth at the conclusion of the indoor Dan DeHart Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Cal men scored 70 points and the women collected 58.
"This was the best non-championship meet that we've had since I've been here," said Cal Director of Track and Field Chris Huffins.
Texas Tech (88) won the men's competition, while Arizona (66.50) captured the women's title.
Cal highlights included a top three sweep of the men's 800-meter run (sophomore Francis Gadayan, 1:54.59, junior David Torrence, 1:55.28, and senior Kevin Davis, 1:55.45), a 1-2 finish in the women's 400-meter dash (junior Alysia Johnson, 54.48, and junior Brook Turner, 55.19), junior Cassandra Strickland's win in the women's triple jump with a Convention Center record and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 43-03.25 (13.19 meters), junior Ed Wright's second-place men's high jump finish in an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7-01.00 (2.16), and a victory in the women's 4x400-meter relay (sophomore Kandi Bonty, Turner, sophomore Kristin Holmes and Johnson, 3:44.07).
Several Bears set records and/or moved up the ranks in the Cal record books. Johnson's time of 54.48 is a new school indoor record in the women's 400, while Strickland's triple jump is a lifetime-best mark and keeps her as the No. 3 all-time triple jumper in Cal history.
"Brook, who finished second, broke the old school 400 record, too," Cal assistant coach Bryan Fetzer said. "Alysia was just off of getting the provisional mark in the quarter. That was big.
"The 4x400 team beat Houston and Arizona State, and ASU was the MPSF and Pac-10 runner-up last year, while Houston was No. 8 at NCAAs last year. That's a huge win for our women. And they've got a lot more left in the gas tank. Kristin Holmes on that relay put us in position to win. Normally her job is to keep us close before getting to Alysia, and Kristin ran phenomenally, with a lot of guts."
Wright's mark in the high jump moves him to No. 10 on Cal's all-time list.
Cal sophomore Artensia Young had a busy day, taking sixth place in the women's triple jump in 41-04.50 (12.61), which moved her to No. 5 on the Cal all-time list, and was seventh in the women's 60-meter hurdles (8.88). Freshman teammate Ryan Shuler took fifth place in the men's pole vault with a height of 16-07.50 (5.07).
Bears senior Kelechi Anyanwu set a lifetime best with a throw of 48-10.75 (14.90) to take fourth place in the women's shot put. That throw is the also the new No. 6 mark on Cal's all-time list. Running the women's 200-meter dash, Bonty ran an indoor lifetime-best time of 25.16 to take 10th.
"Our team is competing with a lot of confidence right now, and it's showing with their performances," Fetzer added. "Not just in one area but across the board. The kids are taking what we're telling them and running with it. They realize they are really good and that they can succeed."
