SEATTLE, Wash. - California won the distance-medley relay in a meet-record time of 9:34.99 on Friday at the MPSF Indoor Championships at Dempsey Indoor. The Golden Bears foursome of senior Giliat Ghebray, senior Nestor Solis, junior Francis Gadayan and senior Kevin Davis, who broke the meet record of 9:38.87 set by Stanford last year, also ran an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying time in the relay. They were .99 of a second from clocking an automatic NCAA qualifying time.
The 9:34.99 is an overall Cal school record, both indoors and outdoors.
"There were some great relay legs there," Cal assistant coach Tony Sandoval said. "First leg was Giliat Ghebray, subbing for David Torrence, and Giliat ran a 2:57.5, so we were in the hunt. Nestor Solis kept us in striking distance. Francis ran a tremendous leg, a 1:49, though we still were behind. Washington was way out ahead, maybe 50-60 yards. Also, 20 yards ahead was Oregon with [1500-meter U.S. junior champion] A.J. Acosta. Kevin made up the ground in the first quarter and ran with Acosta before passing him. The last 400, Kevin ran down All-American Carl Moe from Washington, and ran a 4:00.5. It was a good finish. We're pretty excited about that."
Bears junior Daisy Van Ravenswaay took ninth place overall in the women's weight throw, with a lifetime-best mark of 15.47 meters (50-09.25). Sophomore teammate Emilee Strot was 10th, with a lifetime best of 14.86 (48-09).
Cal junior Thomas Mack ran a lifetime-best 7.96 in the preliminary of the men's 60-meter hurdles to qualify for tomorrow's final and tie a school record, first set by Tim Bogdanof in 2003. Mack, who took second place in the prelim, just missed an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying time of 7.91 seconds.
Golden Bears teammate Cameo Motley clocked a time of 7.80 in the women's 60-meter dash prelim to qualify for tomorrow's final. The freshman took ninth in the race. The provisional qualifying time in the women's 60 is 7.44.
In the men's 200-meter prelim, Cal sophomore Jake Hanson finished ninth, one spot out of the final, with a lifetime-best 22.06.
The MPSF Indoor Championships will conclude tomorrow.
