Johnson Wins 800, Cal Women Win Relay at Husky Classic

SEATTLE, Wash. - California junior Alysia Johnson won the 800 meters in an NCAA Championships qualifying time and ran on the winning 4x400-meter relay at the indoor Husky Classic on Saturday in Seattle, Wash. Johnson ran an indoor school-record 2:05.06 to capture the 800.

Four other Bears - sophomore Mackenzie Pierce in the women's 800, junior David Torrence and senior Kevin Davis in the men's mile and senior Giliat Ghebray in the men's 3000 meters - ran provisional qualifying times for NCAAs. Pierce clocked a 2:08.72 to place fifth in the 800, Torrence ran an indoor school-record 4:01.80 for seventh in the mile, and Ghebray notched an 8:02.07 in the 3000.

The Cal women's 4x400 relay, with sophomore Evelyn Smith, Johnson, sophomore Mackenzie Pierce and junior Brook Turner, ran a 3:42.69 to win its race, while the Cal men's 4x400 relay was sixth in 3:18.05.

In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Kimyon Broom's time of 8.50 was seven hundredths of a second off of an NCAA provisional cut. The Cal freshman was third in the race.

Bears junior Cassandra Strickland was second in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.49 meters and sophomore teammate Artensia Young was fourth with a mark of 12.44 meters; both were close to the 12.65-meter provisional qualifier.

Cal sophomore Missy Faubus (15.05 meters) and senior teammate Kelechi Anyanwu (14.85) finished 3-4 in the women's shot put; the NCAA provisional cut is 15.20.

In the men's 60-meter hurdles, junior Bear Thomas Mack clocked an 8.09, close to the 7.91 provisional time.

Cal next competes in the MPSF Championships Feb. 23-24 also at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.
