STANFORD, Calif. - California junior Thomas Mack won four events, but the Golden Bears men lost to Stanford, 88-75, and, despite a meet record by Alysia Johnson, the Cal women lost to the Cardinal, 86.5-76.5, at the 113th annual Big Meet on Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The Bears posted 17 NCAA regional-qualifying marks or times at the Big Meet.
The Cal men now lead the all-time Big Meet series, 66-45-2, while the Stanford women lead their all-time Big Meet series, 18-10.
"Our kids really competed tough, but it just wasn't enough today," said Chris Huffins, Cal's director of track and field. "Your hat's got to go off to the Stanford team. They did a very good job. We had beaten them three years in a row on the men's side and we came pretty well prepared on the women's side, and they took it to us."
The Stanford men and the Cardinal women each earn five points towards the Lexus Gauntlet Challenge with their victories.
Johnson, a junior, clocked a Big Meet record and regional-qualifying 2:03.43 to win the 800-meter run. Johnson, the 2007 NCAA indoor champion in the 800, surpassed the old meet record of former Cal star Louise Romo, who ran a 2:04.10 in 1984.
"Alysia Johnson, when it's all said and done, is going to be one of the best female athletes to ever compete in the United States," Huffins said. "She is an absolute phenom, and anybody who gets to watch her run right now should take pictures and truly be honored because you're being blessed by greatness."
Also in the 800, Cal sophomore Mackenzie Pierce ran a regional qualifier with a 2:09.44 to take second and junior Bear Pippa MacDonald ran a 2:16.55 to finish sixth.
On the men's side, Mack collected individual wins in the 100-meter dash (wind-aided 10.57), 110-meter hurdles (wind-aided 13.95) and 200-meter dash (lifetime-best 21.62) and led off the Bears' winning 4x100-meter relay (41.34). In an exciting finish, Cal's relay, which included sophomore Jake Hanson, junior Jonathan Suddaby and junior Steven Conrad, won in 41.34 to beat Stanford by one hundredth of a second.
"Thomas is the centerpiece of our team," Huffins said. "He's definitely part of what makes us go. He has become the heart of our team and put our team on his shoulders."
The same three Cal women swept the shot put and discus. Senior Kelechi Anyanwu won the shot in a lifetime-best and regional-qualifying 50-7.50, which placed her fourth on Cal's all-time list. She also won the discus in a regional-qualifying 180-11.
Sophomore Emilee Strot took second in the shot (regional-qualifying 48-10) and discus (regional-qualifying 163-11) and sophomore teammate Missy Faubus was third in the shot (48-8) and discus (lifetime-best and regional-qualifying 161-10).
Bears junior John Ludden improved on his season best with a regional-qualifying 196-7 to win the hammer, junior teammate Ed Wright posted a regional-qualifying 7-0.50 to win the high jump and senior teammate Jonas Hallgrimsson recorded a regional-qualifying 203-08 to win the javelin.
Other regional qualifiers on the Cal men's side included freshman Michael Coe in the 1,500 (3:46.68, 3rd place), freshman Ryan Shuler in the pole vault (16.10.75, 2nd) and senior Kurt Seefeld in the discus (170-9, 3rd).
Three more Cal women collected regional qualifiers in individual events: Senior Carrie Johnson won the hammer in 204-11, junior Brook Turner won the 400 meters in 54.40 and sophomore Inika McPherson won the high jump in 5-10.75. The Bears also notched a qualifier in the women's 4x400-meter relay, as sophomore Kandi Bonty, Turner, Pierce and Alysia Johnson ran a 3:40.13 in the penultimate event of the Big Meet.
Cal next hosts the Brutus Hamilton Invitational next Friday through Saturday, April 13-14, at Edwards Stadium and Goldman Field.
