No. 15 Cal Wins Pac-10 Opener, 1-0, over OSU

BERKELEY - The No. 15 California women's soccer team won its Pac-10 Conference opener with a 1-0 decision over Oregon State on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Junior midfielder Katie Oakes scored the game-winning goal in the first half. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 8-3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Beavers fall to 5-5-1 and 0-1 in the Pac-10.
"Anytime you get a shutout in the Pac-10, it's a good day," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Obliviously we scored a very good goal - I think Katie Oakes had one of those type goals in her for a long time so it was nice to see her get on the scoreboard. I felt like we needed to play most of our players and it was good to give them an opportunity to gel together."
The Bears spent the majority of the first half on the offensive - Cal mounted 10 shots and limited OSU to one shot in the first 45 minutes of play. Oakes scored in the 38th minute for her second goal of the year. After trapping the ball on an intercepted pass, she scored with a shot off the inside of her foot to the left corner of the goal.
The Bears made several advances on goal in the second half but could not tack on an insurance goal. Cal forced Oregon State keeper Colleen Boyd to make three saves in the second half off three shots on goals from the Bears.
Sophomore forward Alex Morgan and freshman midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir paced Cal with two shots on goal each. Junior goalie Gina Pellegrini made two stops in the box for the Bears and Boyd had six saves total for the Beavers. Cal outshot OSU, 16-3, which marks the third consecutive game, the Bears out shot their opponent by a double-digit margin.
Cal returns to action Sunday against Oregon at noon at Edwards Stadium.
