BERKELEY - The No. 15 California women's soccer team won its second Pac-10 Conference game, 5-1, over Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Bears scored four first-half goals and were led by sophomore forward Alex Morgan, who had a game-high three goals. Cal improves to 9-3-0 and 2-0-0 in the Pac-10 while the Ducks fall to 7-5-1 and 0-2-0 in conference play.
"We're very pleased. I think that we've been close to scoring a lot of goals all season long, and I'm excited for the players to get their just reward," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Oregon is a very good team, and they're well coached so it's good to get a win over a team of this caliber."
The Bears scored their first of five goals less than a minute into the game with a shot from junior defender Brianna Bak off a corner kick from sophomore defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva. The goal was Bak's first of the season.
From there, Morgan scored her three goals, all of which were unanswered. The first came two minutes into the game on a fast break and an assist from freshman midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir. Morgan's second score was at 29:30 with a shot to the right corner with Jesolva dishing out her second assist of the game. Six minutes later, Morgan headed a shot in the left side thanks to a pass from senior defender Nkechi Kanu.
Freshman defender/forward Miranda White notched her first goal as a Golden Bear in the 81st minute. Sophomore defender/forward McKenna-Louise McKetty had the assist on White's goal. Oregon got on the board seconds later at 80:36 after Jen Stoltenberg put a shot into the back right corner.
Junior Gina Pellegrini and senior Rosie Aguilera split time in goal for the Bears with Pellegrini grabbing Cal's one save. For the fourth consecutive game, Cal outshot its opponent by a double-digit margin - the Bears had 16 shots to the Ducks' five. Morgan and freshman forward Camellia Senemar paced Cal with three shots on goal. Morgan's three goals tied her individual career record.
The Bears return to Pac-10 action next weekend against Washington State on Oct. 17 and at Washington on Oct. 19.
