PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 13 California women's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision to Washington State on Friday afternoon. The Golden Bears outshot the Cougars, 15-9, and earned 12 corner kicks to WSU's five. Cal senior forward Valerie Barnes scored the Bears' lone goal of the conference game. The Bears drop to 9-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Pac-10 while the Cougars improve to 7-3-4 and 1-1-1.
"We lost to a well organized and opportunistic team today," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "We played them well in the second half but could not convert on our good chances. We need to be more effective in the latter stages of games or this will happen again."
The Cougars got on the board first thanks to a goal from Kiersten Dallstream in the 18th minute. The Bears opened the second period with a goal at the 58:08 mark from Barnes. The Martinez, Calif., native scored after rebounding the ball in the box following a save by the WSU keeper.
Despite 10 shots in the second half, the Bears could not tack on insurance goal. Washington State broke the tie with a goal just 1:11 to play in regulation. Cal junior goalie Gina Pellegrini made one stop while the Bears forced WSU keeper Lindsay Parlee to make seven saves in the box.
Sophomore forward Alex Morgan had team-high six shots and four shots on goal.
The Bears take on Washington in Seattle on Sunday at noon.
