New Mexico, Portland Up Next For Bears

BERKELEY --- California women's soccer will spend the weekend entertaining a pair of non-conference opponents as the Golden Bears play host to the New Mexico Lobos on Friday, August 26 (2 p.m.) and the Portland Pilots on Sunday, August 28 (Noon).
LAST TIME OUT
A late goal in double overtime kept No. 18 Cal from securing a draw in its first Top-25 matchup of the season as the Bears lost to the No. 21 Santa Clara Broncos, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
CURRENT RANKINGS
Cal is currently ranked 21st in the lastest NSCAA polls and 19th in both SoccerAmerica and TopDrawerSoccer's current rankings.
JUMPING ON THE SHIP
Senior Arielle Ship, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year and first-ever from Cal women's soccer, is primed to lead the Bears again in 2016. A NSCAA All-American and All-Pac-12 First Team selection last year, Ship has already picked up a few honors early this season: MAC Hermann Trophy watch list selection; No. 19 ranked player on TopDrawerSoccer's first National Top 100 Players list; and a TDS Preseason Best XI Second Team honoree.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO
New Mexico enters Friday's match after falling in its season opener at then-No. 19 Texas Tech, 2-1. The Bears and Lobos have only faced each other once before - a 2-1 neutral site victory for Cal on Sept. 24, 1999. New Mexico senior Maddie Irwin scored the lone goal for the Lobos in the match against the Red Raiders - a common opponent that Cal will face next Friday in Lubbock.
SCOUTING PORTLAND
Portland is currently 1-0 after a 2-1 home victory over Pac-12 member Washington on August 19 and will host Portland State on Friday before making its way to Berkeley on Sunday. Cal and Portland have a 12-game history, with the Bears trailing the Pilots 4-6-2 all-time. Cal does have a 3-2-1 edge at home and will look to avenge a defeat in their last meeting, a 3-1 setback in Berkeley on Sept. 23, 2010. Freshman Larkin Russell and junior Hannah Griffiths Boston netted the season's first two goals for the Pilots against the Huskies, with Kimberly Hazlett recording the team's first assist on Griffiths Boston's second half score.
TRIPLE DOUBLE
For the second consecutive season, the Pac-12 Coaches have predicted that Bears will finish the regular season in third place. Reigning conference champion Stanford was selected to repeat atop the league standings, with USC picked to finish second. Trailing Cal in the Coaches Poll were UCLA, Arizona, Washington, Washington State, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado, Oregon State and Oregon.
