• Head coach Rick Hirtensteiner took over as the Waves' skipper in 2016 after 17 years as an assistant in Malibu. In his first year, Pepperdine went 29-24 overall and 16-11 in the WCC
• Center fielder Matt Gelalich leads the Waves offensively with a .379 average while Ben Rodriguez leads the way with eight RBI.
• Left-hander Ryan Wilson has anchored the Waves' staff on Fridays and carries a 1-1 record and 1.53 ERA into the weekend. Right-handers Max Gamboa and Wil Jensen complete the projected rotation.
• Last meeting: The Bears and Waves met in 2000 with Pepperdine taking 2 of 3.
LAST TIME OUT
After Gonzaga took the opening game of four in Berkeley, Cal rallied from a 6-0 deficit on Saturday afternoon to pick up an 8-7 victory in 13 innings. Junior Denis Karas provided the biggest moment of the game, doubling to drive in Andrew Vaughn for the game-winning run. Rain forced the suspension of game three, a game Gonzaga ultimately won 8-3 on Sunday morning, but the Bears roared back on a rainy Sunday afternoon to win the series finale 9-5 behind a 4-for-4 day from sophomore Jonah Davis.
THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
Fielding a team full of newcomers, Cal has turned to some fresh faces in key situations so far this season. Freshman Cameron Eden is the team's leading hitter entering the Pepperdine series with a .385 average that benefited greatly from back to back 3-for-4 games to finish the Gonzaga series. Fellow frehman Max Flower has forced his way into the lineup lately, reaching safely in all three Gonzaga games in which he played, and fellow freshman Andrew Vaughn has made an immediate impact as both a hitter (tied for team lead with two home runs) and a pitcher (1-0, 2.25 ERA in four appearances).
STOLEN BASES
Cal has shown itself to be both willing and able when it comes to thievery on the basepaths so far this season and the Bears lead the Pac-12 in stolen bases with 13 entering the week. Sophomore Jonah Davis stands alone as the conference's top base stealer with five entering the week and fellow sophomore Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. is tied for fifth with three.
SOCAL FLAVOR
Expect a large Cal contingent to descend upon Eddy D. Field Stadium this weekend as 11 Golden Bears call Southern California home. The trip is the first of two to the region for Cal this year as the Golden Bears will return to the area from March 24-26 for a three-game series at UCLA.
ON DECK
After this weekend's trip to SoCal, the Bears return to Evans Diamond for their next four games, beginning with a March 14 mid-week contest against Minnesota. After the Golden Gophers depart, Oregon pays a visit from March 17-19 for the first Pac-12 series of the season.
