The Bears Return To Action After Three-Week Break
STANFORD, Calif. – California women's golf returns to the South Bay for the first time since they defeated Stanford at the Big Match last month. This time the Bears will play in a stroke-play event as they take on 16 teams at the Stanford Intercollegiate from Friday-Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course.
Cal will play one round of golf each of the three days as they take on a talented field of teams: No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 Stanford, No. 11 Northwestern, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 14 Washington, No. 17 Oklahoma State, Oregon, Iowa State, Washington State, Florida State, USC, San Diego State, Denver, Harvard, Pepperdine and San Jose State.
The Bears will tee off at 12:05 p.m. from the first tee and they'll be playing with San Jose State and Oklahoma State.
The Bears have come on strong during the fall season. They started it by tying for eighth place at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. Senior Cindy Oh led the way for the Bears as she took fourth place by shooting -4 (212) over three rounds in New Mexico. Freshman Elena Arias (13th, E) and Katherine Zhu (t28th, +4) also made sparkling debuts.
The competition then moved to the Big Match as the Bears teamed with their male counterparts to take down Stanford in match-play. The teams were tied 3-3 after all six pairings finished, leading to a playoff hole by the top pair. Oh sank two birdies in the playoff including the match-winning putt to take down Stanford.
In their most recent competition, Cal surged into fourth on the final day of competition at the Coeur D'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational. Zhu led the charge as she tied for second place by shooting -1 (212) over three rounds.
However, after playing three tournaments in a three-week span, the Bears have had three weeks since traveling to Coeur D'Alene. Allowing them more time to work on their game and prepare.
"The break gives us a good amount of time to have qualifying rounds and work on the things we need to," head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "We've been working around the green and on the green. Stanford's greens are challenging and we want to come in there with some touch and a really good mental strategy."
Last year, the Stanford Intercollegiate was played at Poppy Hills and the Bears captured a fourth place finish. They had to deal with tough weather, but three Bears finished in the top-21 and all five collected top-40 finishes. Cal has claimed one team championship at the Stanford Intercollegiate as the squad won in 2002.
Due to a remodel on the course, last year's event was played at Poppy Hills instead of Stanford's course which presents a different challenge this year.
"Normally when we're walking into Stanford we have a home course feeling, because we've played it so much," McDaniel said. "However, this year we have four student-athletes who haven't played the course before. We don't have to get on a plane, so the territory is familiar and the course is pretty similar to the ones we play every day in practice."
Located in the hills overlooking Stanford's campus, the Stanford University Golf Course is a par-71, 6,130-yard course designed by architects William Bell and George Thomas in 1930. The 54-hole Stanford Intercollegiate is hosted by the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy, Dr. Condoleezza Rice. Dr. Rice served as U.S. Secretary of State under President George W. Bush from 2005-09.
