STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania – Coming off a thrilling win to open the season at Haas Pavilion, the Cal women's basketball team now takes to the road, squaring off against Penn State on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. The Golden Bears (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) head to the east coast on the heels of an 80-79 victory over Houston to start the season, the sixth consecutive year the Bears have opened the year with a win. The Lady Lions (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) also opened the season in the win column, completely a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Providence College on Thursday night.
Sunday's meeting in State College marks just the second meeting all-time between the programs. Cal and Penn State last met during the 1990-91 season, resulting in a 91-77 victory for the Lady Lions. This will be Cal's first game against a Big Ten opponent since the 2016-17 season, when the Golden Bears beat Nebraska, 86-65 on the road. Cal as won eight of its last ten games against Big Ten opposition and each of its last five such meetings.
Playing its first road game of the year, Cal looks to build upon last season's success away from Berkeley. The Golden Bears posted an overall record of 8-6 on the road last season, the team's best road winning percentage since the 2014-15 season. Cal has won eight of its last nine rue road games in non-conference play, the lone loss coming last season at top-ranked Connecticut.
Wooden Award candidate Kristine Anigwe had a dominant performance in Cal's season-opening win on Tuesday, leading all players with 37 points and 13 rebounds. The senor standout scored 21 points in the third quarter alone, the most by any Cal player in a single quarter over the last four seasons. Asha Thomas and Jaelyn Brown added 10 points each for the Bears in Tuesday's win, showing off their well-rounded games. Thomas, an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection last season, added six rebounds and dished out seven assists while committing just one turnover in 35 minutes of play. Brown scored seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter and added a career-high eight rebounds in the victory.
Ranked 24th in the Associated Press Preseason Poll, Cal returns significant depth and experience from last season's team that finished fifth in the Pac-12 and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. Cal was picked to finish fourth this season in both the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches and Media Polls.

SCOUTING THE LADY LIONS
Much like the Golden Bears, Penn State opened the year with a down-to-the wire win on its home court. Trailing Providence by 14 points with less than nine minutes left in the game, the Lady Lions put together an impressive comeback to come away with a 74-72 win on Thursday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. Five different players scored in double-figures for the Lady Lions as Penn State outscored Providence, 23-9, in the fourth quarter.
Amari Carter led Penn State with 15 points, going 3-6 from three-point range on the night, while Teniya Paige and Alisia Smith added 13 points each for the hosts.
A 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch nominee and 2018 WBCA Honorable Mention All-American, Paige averaged 18,4 points per game last season while shooting 33.7 percent from beyond the arc. Carter, a Second Team All-Big Ten selection last season, started all 32 games last season for Penn State and led the conference with 2.6 steals per game.
Head coach Coquese Washington is in her 12th season in State College and has collected Big Ten Coach of the Year honors three times during her tenure with the Lady Lions. Washington returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last season's squad that went 16-16 and reached the First Round of the WNIT. Penn State posted an overall record of 11-4 at home last season, with its only losses coming to Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Radford.
