TULSA, Okla. – Three Golden Bears advanced to the second round of the ITA All-American Championships qualifying singles tournament with Monday wins at the Case Tennis Center. Paul Barretto, Bjorn Hoffmann and Kent Hunter need to win twice each on Tuesday to move on to Wednesday's main draw, which already includes Cal's 75th-ranked Yuta Kikuchi.
 
On Monday, the 121st-ranked Barretto beat Wichita State's Murkel Dillien, 7-5, 6-2; Hoffmann knocked off the 122nd-ranked Chih Chi Huang of Texas, with the Longhorn retiring after trailing 6-1, 1-1; and Hunter defeated Northwestern's Simen Bratholm, 7-6(4), 6-1, in the opening round of 128. Cal junior Jacob Brumm, playing his first-round match at Union High School, fell in a three-setter to Cleveland State's Nico Mostardi, 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-3.
 
In doubles qualifying, Cal's 58th-ranked pair of Barretto and Can Kaya won its round of 64 opener against UNLV's 55th-ranked Alex Kobelt and Jordan Sauer, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(5). But the Bears' attempt to join the 16th-ranked Brumm and Kikuchi in the main draw via qualifying fell short, as they lost to Stanford's 9-16th-seeded and 47th-ranked Alex Rootsaert and Sangeet Sridhar, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(7), in the round of 32.
 
The qualifying singles and doubles tournaments end on Tuesday.
