Biography

Spring 2020: Wound up with a 14-4 singles record and an 11-8 doubles record in his junior season…ended the season on an eight-match winning streak in singles, which included a 6-4, 6-2 victory over USC’s 26th-ranked Riley Smith…had a No. 79 singles ranking as of the March 3 Oracle ITA poll…also had a No. 68 doubles ranking with partner Can Kaya as of the March 3 Oracle ITA poll…the duo posted an 11-7 record, including a 3-2 mark at court-one doubles, including a 6-1 win over UCLA’s Govind Nanda and Keegan Smith, ranked 29th as of the March 3 Oracle ITA poll.

Fall 2019: Had an 11-4 singles record and 7-5 doubles mark (7-4 when paired with Can Kaya) in the first semester of the season…he advanced from singles qualifying to the main draw at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and won thrice in the main draw to reach the round of 16…earlier in the year, Barretto won also won three matches as he advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic…Barretto and Kaya – attempting to repeat as doubles champions – reached the semifinals of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic…but the Cal duo fell in the semis, 9-8(7), to eventual 2019 champs Tadas Babelis/Yannai Barkai of N.C. State…Kaya and Barretto reached the quarters of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, after posting an 8-5, round of 16 victory over Fresno State’s Johannes Seeman and Angus Bradshaw…ended the fall with three consecutive singles victories at Harvard’s Chowder Fest.

Spring 2019: Posted a 15-14 singles record and 25-5 doubles mark, with Barretto partnering with Can Kaya throughout the season…in the NCAA team tournament opening round of 64, Barretto and Kaya beat Drake’s Vuk Budic and Gui Gomes, 7-6(4), at court-two doubles…clinched the doubles point eight times this dual-match season with Kaya…Barretto and Kaya were ranked as high as No. 17 in doubles in the Oracle ITA polls…in singles, Barretto upset UCLA’s 52nd-ranked Govind Nanda, 6-4, 6-4, on court three in Cal’s 4-1 upset of the top-seeded Bruins in the Pac-12 Championship semifinals.
 
Fall 2018: Was 7-3 in singles and 9-1 in doubles…started 9-0 in doubles in the fall…teamed with Can Kaya to win the doubles title at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, with the duo beating Tennessee’s Luca Wiedenmann and Preston Touliatos, 8-3, in the final…the Bears also upset Virginia Tech’s 12th-ranked duo of Alex Ribeiro and Henrik Korsgaard, 8-5, in the Milwaukee semifinals…the two reached the doubles semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, with the duo winning four times in the tournament before falling to Washington’s Jack Davis and Piers Foley, 7-6(5), 6-3, in the semis…in singles, Barretto won four times to qualify for the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships and then won twice – beating Oklahoma State’s 114th-ranked Mathieu Scaglia, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 128 and ODU’s 78th-ranked Aziz Kijametovic, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 – before falling in the round of 32 to Baylor’s 115th-ranked Will Little, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2…earned a No. 98 singles ranking in the Nov. 14 Oracle ITA poll.

Spring 2018: Posted a 21-10 singles record and 10-8 doubles mark in his first year at Cal…in his first postseason, Barretto clinched Cal’s 4-1 win over N.C. State in the NCAA round of 64 when he beat Robert Turzak, 7-5, 6-4, on May 11…partnered with older brother Dominic Barretto to clinch the doubles point over Bryant with a 6-2 win against Philip Belmatch and Grant Pertile in Cal’s dual-match opener on Jan. 12…Paul Barretto also clinched a 4-0 win over San Francisco and oldest brother Marco Barretto on April 10, when Paul beat Paul Giraud, 6-2, 6-4, at court-five singles…teamed with Jacob Brumm to reach the quarterfinals of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship.

Fall 2017: Finished his first semester at Cal with a 13-5 singles record and 5-6 doubles mark…won five matches to reach the singles semifinals at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships…fell in the Aggie Invitational’s top-flight singles final to teammate Bjorn Hoffmann…also got to the singles quarterfinals at the UCSB Classic…captured his first collegiate doubles match by teaming with brother Dominic Barretto to beat Georgia’s Wayne Montgomery and Walker Duncan, 8-6, in the Battle in the Bay Classic round of 16…the Barrettos reached the doubles quarterfinals at regionals.

Personal: Political science major…ranked seventh nationally and third in California in the final TennisRecruiting.net rankings of 2017…hails from one of the San Francisco Bay Area's top tennis families, as the Tiburon product is the younger brother of Cal teammate Nic Barretto and the University of San Francisco’s Marco Barretto…advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the 2016 Pan American ITF Championships…reached the singles round of 16 in the 2017 Easter Bowl Championship…got to the doubles round of 16 in the 2015 and 2016 USTA Boys 16-18 National Clay Court Championships.
