Cal Kicks Off Homestand With Clash Against No. 20 Arkansas
BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball team kicks off a nine-game homestand on Sunday, hosting No. 20/18 Arkansas at 2 p.m. PT at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears (2-2, 0-0 Pac-12) are back in Berkeley after a 74-48 victory at San Diego State on Thursday, and look to extend their win streak to three in a row as the Razorbacks (5-0, 0-0 SEC) come to town. Sunday's showdown with the 20th-ranked Hogs marks the Bears second game this season against a Top-25 foe, with Cal going toe-to-toe with No. 5 UConn earlier this season in Storrs.
The Bears enter the matchup with momentum, coming off back-to-back wins. After picking up their first win of the season in last weekend's home opener vs UC Riverside, the Bears put together an impressive performance on Thursday night against San Diego State, leading the Aztecs wire-to-wire. Southern California natives and upperclassmen Jaelyn Brown, Alaysia Styles, and CJ West led the Bears to their first road win of the season. Brown posted a season-high 18 points, matched her career-high with nine rebounds, and dished out a career-best five assists in just 27 minutes of action. Styles, a San Diego native, scored a career-high 17 points playing in front of her hometown crowd, going 7-for-12 from the floor. Making her first start of the season, West had an efficient outing with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting, giving her back-to-back games in double-figures for the first time in her Cal career. Freshman Evelien Lutje Schipholt led all players with game-high 11 rebounds and finished just one point shy of her first collegiate double-double.
Cal dominated San Diego State on the glass, out-rebounding the Aztecs 44-30 and holding a 23-4 advantage in second-chance points. Defensively, the Bears allowed a season-low 48 points and held the Aztecs to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and forced 16 turnovers.
Cal's defense will now look to slow down a high-flying Arkansas offense that is averaging 91.6 points per game on the season. The meeting against the Razorbacks marks the first of two games on Cal's schedule against SEC foes. The Bears are set to host No. 13 Kentucky at Haas Pavilion on December 21.
