Cal Hosts Grand Canyon In Non-Conference Finale

Golden Bears Close Out Decade With Sunday Doubleheader At Haas
BERKELEY – The final competition at Haas Pavilion for this decade will tip off at 7 p.m. PT on when the Cal women's basketball team hosts Grand Canyon University. The Golden Bears (7-3, 0-0 Pac-12) will be playing their final game of the non-conference slate and look to rebound from a down-to-the-wire defeat to No. 14 Kentucky their last time out. Grand Canyon (5-5, 0-0 WAC) heads to Berkeley on a three-game winning streak in what will be the first meeting between the Golden Bear and Antelope programs.
Sunday's matchup is also the second game in a doubleheader at Haas Pavilion with the Cal men's basketball team. The Golden Bear men take on Harvard at 3 p.m. PT, with the women's game to follow at 7 p.m. PT.
The Golden Bears have impressed through the early stages of 2019-20 season, winning the Cal Classic and upsetting No. 20 Arkansas on November 24. Two of Cal's three losses this season have come against Top-15 opponents, falling at then No. 5 - now top-ranked – Connecticut, 72-61, on November, and 14th-ranked Kentucky, 63-61, last Sunday.
The matchup against the Wildcats was a thriller that saw the Bears go toe-to-toe with the foes from the SEC. Cal erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit and tied the game at 61-61 with 9.7 seconds left in regulation. However, Kentucky standout Rhyne Howard sunk the game-winning jumper with three seconds left on the clock to lift the Wildcats to victory. Howard led Kentucky with 29 points – 19 of which came in the fourth quarter – while Jaelyn Brown led the Bears with 18 points and seven rebounds.
A senior from Murrieta, Calif., Brown leads the Bears and ranks sixth in the Pac-12 in scoring this season, averaging a career-best 15.5 points per game on the season. Junior forward Alaysia Styles is also in the midst of a career year and is second on the team in scoring at 10.2 points per game. Senior center CJ West leads the Bears in both field goal percentage (56.5 percent) and rebounding (7.9 rebounds per game). West, Brown (6.8 rebounds per game), and freshman forward Evelien Lutje Schipholt (6.6 rebounds per game), have led a committed effort on the glass this season. The Bears have out-rebounded their opponents in eight of their first ten games of the season and rank fifth in the Pac-12 with 14.5 offensive rebounds per game.

SCOUTING THE ANTELOPES
Grand Canyon heads to the Bay in the midst of a three-game win streak, their longest of the season. After opening the season at 2-5, the Antelopes have rattled off three consecutive wins, topping UNLV, UCSB, and Whittier during their recent hot stretch.
The most recent outing for GCU was a 77-41 home victory over Whittier on December 22. The Lopes were led by 16 points and seven rebounds from Da'jah Daniel while Jada Holland added 15 points for the hosts. Carla Balague added four points to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists.
A Second-Team All-WAC selection last season as a junior, Daniel leads GCU in scoring this season at 12.6 points per game. The 6'4" forward is also averaging a team-high 9.5 rebounds per game on the season and has four double-doubles on the year. A Bay Area product from Bishop O'Dowd high school, Holland is second on the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game and has scored in double-figures in her last three outings.
Grand Canyon went 7-20 last season, including a 5-11 record in conference play. The Antelopes have eight newcomers on this season's roster, with seven letterwinners and two starters back from the 2018-19 campaign.
Sunday's game will be the first meeting between the Bears and the Antelopes. Cal has won its last six games against teams from the WAC.
Grand Canyon is led by head coach Nicole Powell, who is in her third season as head coach at GCU. A Bay Area standout during her playing days at Stanford, Powell was as three-time All-American and two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year for the Cardinal. The third pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft, Powell spent time as an assistant at both Gonzaga and Oregon before being named head coach of the Antelopes in April 2017.
