The Bears Drop 6-5 Game To Arizona State In 11 innings

BERKELEY – Cal and Arizona State entered Friday night tied in the Pac-12 standings, and the entertaining series opener they played showed just how even the teams are.

The Bears got a game-tying home run from Andrew Vaughn in the eighth but fell, 6-5, in 11 innings at Evans Diamond.

Spencer Torkelson singled sharply past third base to bring home the go-ahead run in the top of the 11^th, and the Sun Devils (36-14, 15-10 Pac-12) took the first of this three-game series, the Bears' final home games on the schedule.

Cal (29-18, 14-11) trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth when Vaughn drilled a full-count pitch from RJ Dabovich over the wall in right-center to knot the score. It was the team-high 15^th homer of the season for Vaughn, and the 50^th of his career, tying him with Troy Penix for second place on Cal's all-time list.

He trails leader Xavier Nady by seven with five games left in the regular season, plus potential postseason games.

When this three-game series will continue is unknown. Game two is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Saturday, but steady rain is expected in Berkeley much of the day. The status for first pitch will be evaluated in the morning, with a Sunday doubleheader possible if the game can't be played Saturday.

Cal took an early 3-0 lead Friday on Sam Wezniak's three-run homer in the second, his 10^th home run on the season. The Bears led 4-2 before Arizona State scored a run in the seventh and two in the top of the eighth to go up 5-4 to set the stage for Vaughn's tying blast.

Vaughn, the 2018 Golden Spikes winner who this week was named a semifinalist for the 2019 award, finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Cal and Arizona State combined for four errors, but there also were some defensive gems. Cal right fielder Max Flower made two outstanding catches, including a lunging grab in foul territory in the 10^th where his momentum flipped him over the wall and into the Bears' bullpen.

Wezniak made a circus catch at shortstop where he leapt for Gage Workman's liner in the sixth, had it deflect off his glove and bounce off his hat before he plucked it out of the air.

Cal starter Arman Sabouri worked a season-high six innings and held Arizona State to two runs with one walk and six strikeouts.

Saturday's 1:05 p.m. game is scheduled to air live on the Pac-12 Network.
