Dana Moffat Named Pac-12 Athlete Of The Year

Payne, Faralisch, and Wesselmann Voted All-Pac-12

SAN FRANCISCO – Senior Dana Moffat has been named Pac-12 Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year and three other members of the Cal women's rowing team were recognized for their exemplary performance this season, the Pac-12 office announced Tuesday morning. Along with Moffat, junior Juliane Faralisch, senior Sydney Payne, and senior Charlotte Wesselmann earned All-Pac-12 honors. Conference awards are nominated and voted upon by the conference head coaches.

Moffat, an economics major from Manilus, New York, is the first Golden Bear to win the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year award since 2016 when the honor went to Kendall Chase. This is also the first time Moffat has been named to the All-Pac-12 Team after having earned All-Academic honors in each of the past two years.

Moffat has been a member of the Bears' varsity eight for the past three years and has helped the boat to an undefeated season in 2019.

"Dana has had a great career at Cal as one of our top performers in the classroom and on the water but over the last two years she's really stepped it up a notch," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "Whether she's in the Cal varsity eight or the U.S. senior eight, she's a force. It's been fun watching her get to this point, and we're lucky to have her for a few more races."

Faralisch, a business major from Heidelburg Germany, is also a member of the undefeated varsity eight this year. Last year, Faralisch was a Pocock CRCA First Team All-American and was named the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Newcomer of the Year in 2017.

Wesselmann, a senior architecture major from Flensburg Germany, also earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career. Racing for the undefeated varsity eight as well, Wesselmann had previously earned All-Academic honors and been named a Pocock CRCA Second Team All-American.

Sydney Payne, a senior from Toronto, Canada and member of the Canadian National Team, has raced for Cal's varsity eight for the past three seasons. This is Payne's first time being named to the All-Pac-12 Team.

With these honors in tow, the Golden Bears will head to Indianapolis to race in the 2019 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship this Friday-Sunday. The Bears won last year's NCAA championship and have finished first or second for the past six years running.
