BERKELEY - Jonathan Estrada gave the California men's soccer team an early 1-0 lead over second-ranked Stanford in Friday's Big Clasico at Edwards Stadium. But the Cardinal tied the game, 1-1, before halftime and got an unassisted strike from Gabe Segal in the 70th minute that sealed a 2-1 loss for the Golden Bears in each team's Pac-12 Conference opener.
Friday's game marked the second straight one-goal game between Cal and Stanford, including the Bears' 1-0 win on the Farm in the 2018 season finale.
Cal's record now stands at 3-2-1 (0-1-0 Pac-12). Stanford is 6-0-0 (1-0-0 Pac-12).
In the eighth minute, Cal defender
JJ Foe Nuphaus had a looping header saved by Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Thomas, and about 20 seconds later, Cal took its lead. First, Cal midfielder
Francisco Perez stole the ball from a Stanford player deep in the Cardinal's defensive third and forged down the flank before crossing into the box. Estrada got on the end of the cross to slot the ball past Thomas and give the Bears their lead.
Â
"Francisco went down the line and cut it back, and I was just to there to hit it inside the left post," Estrada said.
Â
The Bears played a strong first half. But Stanford equalized in the 40th minute, when Ousseni Bouda served the ball into the Cal box, and Arda Bulut scored from close range to tie the game, 1-1.
Â
The rivals stayed tied at 1-1 at halftime.
Â
Stanford outshot Cal, 10-8, in the second half and forced
Drake Callender to make five of his seven saves in the final 45 minutes. Each side had its chances in the second half, though, as Cal took four shots early on. Cal freshman forward
Arman Samimi came close in the 51st minute, but Thomas stopped his shot with one of his four saves on the day.
Â
Segal scored the go-ahead goal on a long-range shot at 69:11. Seconds later, Estrada shot just over Stanford's goal, and Samimi shot wide in the 88th minute on Cal's last shot of the game.
Â
"The first half was great, (before) giving up the late goal," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "We had a great 40 minutes before then. You're always disappointed when you give up a goal. The second half I didn't think we had quite the zip in our legs that we did in the first half."
Â
Cal continues its homestand when it hosts San Francisco on Sept. 28 at noon at Edwards Stadium.
