Bears Drop Midweek Contest To Cal Poly

Cal’s Two-Game Win Streak Snapped With 14-4 Defeat

BERKELEY – California saw an early two-run lead quickly erased in a 14-4 loss to Cal Poly on Tuesday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium.

After the Golden Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Cal Poly (11-9) scored 11 straight runs between the second and seventh frames to put away the non-conference contest. Cal (10-10) saw its two-game win streak snapped and dropped to 2-2 in midweek games.

Connor Sullivan worked a clean opening frame and Cal plated two runs on three hits in the home half as Nathan Martorella scored on a double play ball and Dylan Beavers crossed the plate on an infield single by Hance Smith. The Bears went scoreless in the following six consecutive innings before a two-run single by Trevor Tishenkel in the eighth provided a late-inning boost.

Cal Poly cut into the Bears' early lead with one run in the second before taking the lead for good in the third on a two-run home run by Brookes Lee. Sullivan (0-1) took the loss with three runs allowed in two innings pitched. Eight Bears pitched in the loss.

Caleb Lomavita and Tishenkel had multi-hit games, both going 2-for-4. Keshawn Ogans (1-for-4) extended his hit streak to 10 games with a single in the seventh inning.

The loss snapped Cal's five-game win streak against the Mustangs, which dated back to 2017. The two teams will go head-to-head again in Berkeley on April 5.
