Cal Hits Four Home Runs In Loss To No. 9 Stanford
Cal (12-14, 3-11 Pac-12) fell behind early for the second straight night and faced a 6-0 deficit midway through the fourth inning. The Cardinal (20-7, 9-2) piled on eight runs in the top of the ninth to make it an 18-2 contest before Cal put up six runs of its own in the final home half, keyed by a two-run home run from Carson Crawford and a three-run shot off the bat of Peyton Schulze.
Kade Kretzschmar and Jack Johnston hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Cal has hit seven long balls in the series.
Stanford matched its season high with 22 hits, five of them going for extra bases, and scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings to set the tone. The Cardinal hit three home runs, including a pair by Drew Bowers and one from Tommy Troy.
Christian Becerra (0-2), making his fourth start of the season, pitched four complete innings with 10 hits and six runs allowed, along with five strikeouts. Connor Sullivan also threw four innings while Jack Kirrer, Ben Lake and Vaughn Mauterer all saw the mound in the ninth.
Stanford freshman Matt Scott (5-0) picked up the win as he rebounded from a leadoff single by Rodney Green Jr. to retire 11 of the next 12 batters he faced. He went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits along with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Despite the late deficit, Cal refused to go down quietly. Crawford's fifth home run of the season came against reliever Drew Down and extended the sophomore's reached-base streak to 18 games. The rally continued with back-to-back singles by Green Jr. and Dom Souto to put runners in scoring position for Caleb Lomavita, who singled up the middle to score Green Jr. from second. With two runners on base, Schulze smashed an opposite-field home run for his fifth of the season.

Cal and Stanford will conclude their series at 6:05 p.m. PT on Saturday. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Bay Area with Guy Haberman calling the action live from Stu Gordon Stadium.
