SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The California women's soccer team (3-3-2) closed out the nonconference season Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 road win over San Diego (1-7-1). After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Golden Bears netted two goals in the second period for their first comeback win of the season.
Cal dominated possession the entire first half and got quality looks in the Toreros' 18-yard box but couldn't break through despite firing off seven shots. It appeared the half was going to go scoreless, but USD made an aggressive push in the 44th minute and found the first goal of the match to take a 1-0 lead. Katie Baxter was the goal scorer for the Toreros.
In the 54th minute,
Skylar Briggs and
Karlie Lema had a couple great touches to get Lema headed towards the net. The junior forward then played a perfect ball to
Mia Fontana who netted the equalizer by rolling a shot in with the outside of her left foot. It was Fontana's first goal of the season, Lema's second assist, and Briggs' first.
In the 69th, Miriam Hills swung a perfect ball over to
Abby Borchers who redirected it to a wide open
Velize King. King capped off the perfect passing display with a quick touch to score her second goal of the season and the game winner.
The Bears were outshot 5-4 in the second half but made the most of their looks scoring both shots they put on frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Teagan Wy had an uneventful day thanks to the Bears' defense, which only allowed three shots on goal. Wy finished with two saves and
Makena Smith made her season debut in the final minute of the match earning a save of her own.
