Bears Look To Stay Undefeated

BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team hits the road for the first time in this early portion of the season and will take on San Jose State on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT at the Provident Credit Union Events Center. This will mark the 36th all-time meeting between the programs with the Golden Bears (2-0) owning a 25-10 series advantage and having won eight out of the last 10 contests.

The Bears last faced the Spartans (1-0) during last season's Raising The B.A.R. Invitational in December and came away with a 74-51 win. In that contest, Marta Suárez posted her first-ever double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Michelle Onyiah nabbed a career-high five steals and Lulu Twidale knocked down four 3-pointers.
The Spartans are led by third-year head coach and former Cal assistant April Phillips. San Jose State's top returners include Sydni Summers, who was named to the 2023-24 Mountain West All-Freshman Team. The Spartans are coming off a 55-36 win at Xavier.

Saturday's game will air on the Mountain West Network with Daniel Barrera on the call.

In the 88-36 win over Idaho State on Thursday:
- For the second straight game, Ioanna Krimili hit four 3-pointers (4-of-7) and led all scorers with 18 points.
- Five Bears brought down at least five rebounds led, by eight each from Suárez and Onyiah.
- Twidale dished out a career-high six assists to go along with a trio of triples.
- The 52-point margin of victory marked Cal's largest since the Golden Bears (2-0) defeated Cal State Northridge 106-44 on Dec. 30, 2015, and was the fourth-largest since the 2002-03 season.
- The Bears held the Bengals (1-1) to under 10 points in three of the four quarters and just 22% from the field.
- The 36 points allowed were the fewest since the Bears gave up 35 in a win over Colorado on Jan. 8, 2016.
The Bears received six votes in the USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll (Oct. 24).
Krimili is currently the nation's leader in both career triples (345) and most career games with at least five made 3-pointers (24).
Krimili and Twidale are off to a hot start from beyond the arc. They've connected on eight each, which is tied for fourth in the nation; they are both shooting over 50% from downtown and overall.
Natalia Ackerman has been incredibly productive off the bench. She is averaging 7.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in just 11.0 minutes per game. She is also a perfect 6-for-6 from the field during that span.
Onyiah is currently seven blocks away from taking the fifth spot on Cal's all-time list. She would pass recent graduate ('22) Evelien Lutje Schipholt.
Cal has hit 24 triples this season, which rank fourth in the nation (through Nov. 7).
The Bears have put up a combined 178 points through the first two games of the season, which is their most through the first two games of a campaign since putting up 183 in the first two games off the 1994-95 season.
Cal set a single-season program record with 282 made 3-pointers last year.
The returning trio of Krimili, Suárez and Twidale combined for 144 3-pointers last season, which accounted for 51% of the team's total triples made.
Suárez proved to be one of the most versatile players on the team last season as she made impacts on both ends of the floor, leading the team in rebounds (171) while ranking third in 3-point makes (42).
Twidale was only one of two freshmen in the Pac-12 to either score 24 points or hit six triples in a game; the other was USC's Juju Watkins.
This year's roster features the No. 22-ranked freshman class, which includes two rookies who are part of ESPN HoopGurlz Top 100 - Kamryn Mafua (No. 54) and Zahra King (No. 76) along with last year's Gatorade and MaxPreps Hawaii State Player of the Year Lola Donez and Gabby Abigor.
The Bears welcome four transfers in graduate forward Ackerman (Cal Poly), sophomore guard Gisella Maul (Texas), graduate guard Jayda Noble (Washington) and graduate guard Kayla Williams (USC).
