3 Golden Bears Set for NCAAs
Lechno-Wasiutynski, Silva, Stepanov Set To Compete In Orlando
The California men's tennis team has three student-athletes at the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships at the UTSA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The tournament, which begins Tuesday, will have a 64-man singles draw and 32-pair doubles draw.Â
Sophomore
Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski was the first Golden Bear to qualify for the NCAA Championships after reaching the final at the ITA Regionals in October. Lechno-Wasiutynski has shined this fall so far with a 9-1 collegiate singles record, with two wins over ranked opponents. This will be his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. Lechno-Wasiutynski will take on Mississippi State's Benito Sanchez Martinez, who is 11th-ranked in the country, in the opening round Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. PT.Â
Senior
Tiago Silva joins Lechno-Wasiutynski in NCAA Singles. Silva qualified for the tournament after defeating three ranked opponents in the ITA West Sectionals during November. Silva, who transferred to Cal from the University of Pacific, will make his second appearance at the NCAA Championships. At UOP, he became the Tigers'second singles player ever to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship. This fall, Silva has a 10-4 singles record with a team-high four ranked wins. He will take on Baylor's Devin Badenhorst in Tuesday's opening round at 12 p.m. PT.
Silva will also be competing alongside junior
Timofey Stepanov in the doubles main draw. The duo, which was ranked seventh in the preseason, qualified for NCAA doubles after going 5-0 in the ITA Northwest Regionals. This is Stepanov's second appearance at the NCAA Championships after competing in the singles draw last year. Silva and Stepanov will take on Middle Tennessee's Karim Al-Amin and Onrej Horak in Wednesday's opening round at a time to be determined.
Both tournaments conclude Sunday.
