Biography

AS A JUNIOR (2019):
  • Made 12 starts and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors.
  • Went 6-2 with a 2.06 ERA. In 74 1/3 innings, allowed 55 hits, 23 runs (17 earned), 21 walks and struck out 62.
  • Held opponents to a .210 batting average.
  • Finished third in the Pac-12 in ERA.
  • Threw his first career complete game May 19 in a 3-2 win at home vs. Arizona State, allowing five hits and striking out nine.
  • Struck out a career-high 10 over 8 1/3 innings in an April 19 victory at No. 1 UCLA.
  • Enjoyed a stretch throughout April where he went eight-plus innings in four consecutive starts.
  • Twice was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.
  • Missed essentially the first month of the regular season while recovering from appendicitis.
  • Drafted in the seventh round by the Colorado Rockies in the 2019 MLB Draft. 
AS A SOPHOMORE (2018):
  • Cal's opening day starter in 2018 stayed in the weekend rotation all season and made 15 starts.
  • Finished the year 5-5 with a 6.15 ERA. Struck out 52 in 71.2 innings pitched.
  • Provided one of the season's most memorable moments with five scoreless innings in Cal's season-opening win at San Diego. Allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out six to earn the victory.
  • Combined with fellow Vintage High product Aaron Shortridge to pitch Cal to a 8-2 win over eventual NCAA tournament team Baylor at the Frisco Classic. Worked five innings and allowed just two runs to pick up the win.
  • Struck out a career-high nine in a win over Cal St. Bakersfield on Feb. 23.
AS A FRESHMAN (2017):
  • Filled the Friday starter role in his first collegiate season and went 3-5 with a 4.64 ERA.
  • Appeared in 16 games with 15 starts and led the staff with 77.2 innings pitched. Struck out 55 and walked 49 during his freshman campaign.
  • Earned his first collegiate win on March 11 at Pepperdine, going 6.2 innings and striking out eight while allowing two earned runs.
  • Win No. 2 came against Washington State on March 31 as he worked six scoreless innings. Earned his third win one week later against Arizona State when he allowed just one unearned run, didn't walk anyone and struck out five in seven strong innings against the Sun Devils.
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL:
  • Napa, Calif. native starred at Vintage High School in Napa and was one of the top high school pitchers in the state of California in 2016. Went 9-2 with a 0.67 ERA, 124 strikeouts, 17 walks and just seven earned runs allowed in 73.2 innings pitched. Also hit .345 with 20 runs, 12 RBI, eight doubles, two triples and four home runs in 2016.
  • Standout senior season earned second team All-America honors from MaxPreps.com as well as National High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Pacific Coast, ABCA/Rawlings All-Region 8, American Family Insurance All-USA California All-State Team.
  • Also named CalHiSports.com All-State Super Elite first team, Monticello Empire League Player of the Year and Rawlings/Perfect Game All-America honorable mention.
  • Two-time Area Code Games participant (2014, 2015).
  • 2014 and 2015 Underclassman High Honorable Mention by Perfect Game.
  • Finished his high school career with a 13-7 record, 1.44 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 136.1 innings. Also hit .316 with 49 runs, 45 RBI, 15 doubles, four triples and seven home runs in three varsity seasons.
  • Also played quarterback for the Vintage football team.
  • Member of the Vintage Honor Roll and was a student of the month.
  • Counts fishing, movies, music and hiking among his hobbies.
  • Played for the Bellingham Bells in the summer of 2016.
  • Parents are Denise and Daryl Horn. Has two siblings, Greta and Joe. Father, Daryl, played baseball at Sacramento State.
