Biography
2023-24: The Berkeley native ended perhaps his best collegiate season on the All-Pac-12 Second Team and on the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll…he led the Bears in wins in doubles and tied Timofey Stepanov for the team high in singles wins, posting 20-9 records in both…in doubles, Chang partnered with Mikey Wright to go 7-2 and earn a No. 75 ranking in the final ITA poll, and, in singles, he clinched a pair of 4-0 Cal victories over Pepperdine and Utah…Chang garnered the first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor of his career March 19 after leading Cal to 4-1 wins over Oregon and Washington, pairing with Wright to clinch the doubles point in both matches and winning in singles against the Ducks…Chang collected his second Pac-12 Player of the Week award April 9 after winning three times in singles and, with Wright, twice in doubles in Cal wins over Utah, UC Santa Barbara and Saint Mary's…at the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships in October, Chang reached the singles quarterfinals.
2022-23: Chang finished 9-8 in singles and 5-6 in doubles – including winning four of six total matches at the Napa Valley Invitational in September – with the sophomore seeing limited action in the spring.
2021-22: Posted a 1-2 singles record and a 7-9 doubles mark in his first season as a Golden Bear…in Cal’s 7-0 rout of Army on Feb. 26, Chang beat Vishnu Bodavula, 6-3, 7-5, for his first collegiate singles victory…he earned his first doubles win in his first collegiate home match on Jan. 22 in Berkeley, where he paired with Mikey Wright to beat Felipe Rincon and Diego Jarry, 6-2, on court three as part of Cal’s 5-2 win over Saint Mary’s.
Personal/Previous: Political economy major…Chang ranked as the nation’s 47th-best recruit by TennisRecriting.net – he was ranked as high as 26th in 2020 – and as the 11th-best recruit from the state of California…a five-star recruit, he has career-best USTA national boys’ 16 rankings of sixth in singles and eighth in doubles…Chang alls winning the boys’ 16 singles title in the 2019 USTA International Spring Championships his favorite moment in sports…he also won the 2019 USTA National Level 3 Boys’ 16 singles and doubles championships and captured USTA national doubles titles in 2017 and 2018…Chang competed for the USTA NorCal Team from 2015-19…Chang has a prior connection to Cal in grandfather Bob Buchanan, who is a professor emeritus in the University of California’s Department of Plant and Microbial Biology.
