Berkeley, Calif. -
After recording its highest offensive output of the year (18 goals) in the morning match versus UC Santa Cruz, the Bears one-upped themselves in a 19-3 drubbing of Santa Clara this afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. Brian Rieben and Greg Snyder led Cal offensively with three goals apiece.
With most of the Cal starters taking the second match of the day off, the backup squad came in and performed equally as well, earning the Bears' 11th victory of the year. In a balanced scoring attack, twelve Cal players tallied at least one goal in the match.
Just like in the morning match, Junior driver Attila Banhidy found the back of the net early, this time just 19 seconds into the match to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. Cal took a 3-0 lead before the Broncos' Whit Gilfillan put Santa Clara on the board at the 5:05 mark of the first period. Only 1:10 later, Gilfillan slipped one into the net once again, bringing the Broncos within one, 3-2. But that was as close as Santa Clara would get, as the Bears scored nine straight to take a 12-2 lead with 1:17 remaining in the half. Cal took a 12-3 lead into halftime.
The Bears blanked the Broncos in second half action, outscoring the visiting squad 7-0 in the final two periods. Snyder recorded all three of his goals in the half while Rieben tallied two.
With the victory Cal improves to 11-4 on the season while Santa Clara falls to 10-15.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m., as they travel to Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos in MPSF action.
