2002 So-Cal Men's Water Polo Tournament Update

Los Angeles, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Cal men's water polo team (1-0) won its first match of the SoCal Tournament, and the season, 15-5 over Navy (3-2) this morning at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.

The Bears scored early and often as they netted nine goals in the first two periods to go into the break with a commanding 9-4 lead.

Junior two-meter man Greg Panawek and junior driver Attila Banhidy paced the Bears with three goals apiece, in a match that featured nine different scorers. In the net, senior Russell Bernstein recorded one first half save while junior Tim Kates tallied two second half saves.

Cal will face No. 6 UCLA at 4:10 p.m. in the Bears' second and final match of the day. If Cal wins tonight, they will play tomorrow at 10:20 a.m. in a semifinal match versus the winner of Pool A (Stanford, Long Beach State & UC San Diego).
