No. 2 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats No. 14 Long Beach State, 14-5

LONG BEACH, CALIF. - The California men's water polo team (19-3, 2-1 MPSF) scored six first quarter goals on Sunday, as 11 different players scored in the match, lifting the No. 2-ranked Golden Bears to a 14-5 win over No. 14 Long Beach State (5-11, 0-3 MPSF) at the Long Beach Campus Pool. Nick Korsgaden and Jeff Greenwood each scored two goals for the 49ers, coached by former Cal All-American and Olympian Gavin Arroyo.

Cal jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first six minutes of the game after sophomore Frank Reynolds' goal at 2:17 in the first quarter. Korsgaden tallied his first goal of the day at 1:46 to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Cal got back-to-back goals from junior All-American Michael Sharf (0:58) and senior All-American John Mann (0:05) in the final minute of the quarter to take a 6-2 lead. Sharf finished with two goals on the day for Cal, along with junior Jeff Tyrell and senior Andrija Vasilijevic.

Long Beach cut the deficit to 6-3 at 5:21 in the second quarter as senior Jay Gerardi scored on a penalty shot, but the Bears would score the next three goals to grab a commanding 9-3 lead. Vasilijevic (3:16), sophomore Trent Calder (2:37) and Sharf (2:12) scored for Cal in that late second quarter run. Cal tallied three more goals in the third quarter, wrapped around Korsgaden's second goal of the day at 3:32, to take a 12-5 lead after three quarters of action.

In goal, Cal's junior goalie Mark Sheredy finished the day with seven saves while his counterpart from Long Beach, Steve MacKenzie, finished with four. Junior Zac Monsees led the Bears with three assists, and Mann had a team-high four ejections earned.

The Bears next host Pepperdine on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal then hosts UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29 at Spieker Aquatics.
