Oct. 28, 2006

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (20-3, 3-1 MPSF) broke away from a 3-3 first period tie by scoring the next seven goals on the way to a 17-12 win over No. 10 Pepperdine (10-14, 0-3 MPSF) Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears were led by seniors Andrija Vasiljevic and John Mann, who scored five goals apiece. Junior goalie Mark Sheredy finished with nine saves.

The first period of the match was tight. After Vasiljevic and junior Jeff Tyrrell gave Cal a 2-0 lead, Pepperdine came storming back on scores by JP MacDonell and Jason Lagten to tie the contest with 43 second left in the opening period. Tyrrell then scored his second goal of the match with 24 seconds left, only to see a MacDonell goal with a second left in the opening period tie the match, 3-3.

The Bears proceeded to dominate the second period, outscoring the Waves, 5-0, to take an 8-3 halftime lead. From there, Cal scored the first two goals of the second half on shots by Mann and junior Michael Sharf for a 10-3 advantage. Christian Cardey finally broke the scoring slump for Pepperdine with a goal at 5:40 left in the third period, but the Bears scored three of the next four goals for a 13-5 Cal lead after three periods.

The Waves ended up outscoring the Bears, 7-4, in the final period, including the last two goals by MacDonell, but Cal had enough cushion for the 17-12 win. Besides the five goals by Vasiljevic and Mann, Tyrrell and Sharf added two goals apiece for the Bears. MacDonell paced the Waves with four goals, and goalie Travis Stachowski collected seven saves.

Cal will next host No. 7 UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 29 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
