Cal Welcomes No. 8 Washington

BERKELEY – As expected, Pac-12 play has proven potent.
So much in fact that California, which has spent time in the top 25 during the season, has been unable to record a league win since late March when it swept Stanford.
With nine games remaining in the regular season, all conference competitions, this weekend does not look to become easier as the Golden Bears host the eighth-ranked Washington Huskies in a three-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m. (PT) at Levine-Fricke Field.
Saturday's game is scheduled for noon and Sunday's at 1 p.m. Broadcast of the series is available on the Pac-12 Network with live stats accessible on CalBears.com.
A hard-fought win against UC Davis on Wednesday gave Cal the sweet taste of victory as the Bears remain undefeated against in-state non-conference opponents.
After posting a 6-4 comeback against the Aggies in a midweek melee, where the Bears returned from a 3-0 deficit, the team hopes to eat from the same sweet fruit this weekend when Cal looks for its first win against a ranked team this season.
The Huskies are no average foe, outlasting the sixth-ranked Oregon Ducks to go 2-1 in the series and sweeping the 13th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in a two-game series that included a 3-0 shutout display.
The matchup has been closely-contested from the outset with the Bears slightly edging the Huskies 44-41 all-time and the teams splitting the series the last two seasons. Cal dropped the most recent series, but avoided the sweep with a 5-3 victory in game 3 in 2015.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON
A series win over the No. 6 Oregon Ducks and a two-game sweep of the No. 13 Alabama Tide, have the No. 8 Huskies (34-10, 8-7) in a solid spot as the season nears end.
With senior Ali Aguilar named as the 13th overall pick on Monday in the National Pro Fastpitch Draft, Washington will be coming in to the weekend series with more confidence.
Aguilar, who has a .373 batting average, leads the team with 39 runs and has also collected 22 walks along with teammates Casey Stangel and Morganne Flores to lead the team.
Of the main starters, Stangel leads at the plate with a .375 batting average and 48 hits. The senior has also recorded 26 runs.
Impressively, non-starters Brittany Were (.444) and Maggie Gallagher (.421) boast batting averages above .400 and can have a huge impact when they appear in the lineup.
In the circle, Taran Alvelo leads the pitching corps. The sophomore holds a 2.19 ERA and a solid 21-6 record. She has thrown a notable 148 strikeouts in 160.0 innings pitched ranking second in the Pac-12.
Strong defensive efforts by Cal and a great leadoff by Pac-12 double leader Jazmyn Jackson (16) could be the key to the Bears' success against the Huskies.
