BERKELEY – A sunny day in Strawberry Canyon concluded with cloudy results.
California gave up the first game in its series with No. 8 Washington on Friday, allowing a 4-0 shutout in Berkeley.
The Golden Bears (27-17, 3-12 Pac-12) allowed three runs in the top of the third to the Huskies (35-10, 9-7) who posted nine hits on the day compared to Cal's four.
Producing a single hit in 4 of 7 innings, proved costly for Cal which produced a trio of 1-2-3 frames during its at-bat.
Defense from the Bears highlighted the day keeping the Huskies scoreless for five innings. Some key catches from Lindsay Rood and Khala Taylor, who prevented a homer a nice leap right on the backfield wall, kept the Washington defense from scoring uncontested.
Zoe Conley also displayed a strong pitching effort, despite recording her 11th loss of the season Friday. The redshirt sophomore finished with six strikeouts, a couple shy of her season high.
The Bears return for game two on Saturday at noon (PT) at Levine-Fricke Field. Broadcast of the series is available on the Pac-12 Networks with live stats accessible on CalBears.com.
