Cal Drops Series to No. 8 Washington

BERKELEY – A sunny sky on Saturday afternoon provided the perfect backdrop for California's Strikeout Cancer Day.
In fact, spirited from the nearly 600 onlookers and honorary pink and white uniforms, Cal improved its performance from less than 24 hours earlier when it was shutout by series opponent and eighth-ranked Washington.
Despite the improved performance at the plate, the Golden Bears' seven hits were not enough to thwart the Huskies' defense and overcome a two-run deficit. Cal (27-18, 3-13 Pac-12) gave up its fifth Pac-12 series after falling 4-2 in this weekend's second matchup.
Highlighted by Annie Aldrete's single run homer to lead off the bottom of the sixth, the Bears not only improved their hit count – up from four on Friday – but also avoided a shutout with a pair of scores.
Kobie Pettis' double to open the fourth frame gave the Bears life after giving up a three-run homer in the top of the third. Octavia Bond stepped in as a pinch runner and was brought around the bases on a single from Aldrete, and a fielder's choice during Khala Taylor's at- bat.
A run in the top of the fifth by the Huskies, kept the Bears at Bay and prevented a comeback.
While credited with the loss, senior Stephanie Trzcinski pitched a productive game allowing just six hits, down from nine in the opening game of the series.
Cal looks to avoid its fifth league sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m.(PT). The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with live stats available on CalBears.com.
