Julia Rosenqvist Advances In NCAA Singles
ORLANDO, Fla. – Julia Rosenqvist dominated her opener in the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday to advance to Tuesday's round of 32 at the USTA National Campus. But senior teammate
Olivia Hauger fell in her round of 64 match to former NCAA champion Brienne Minor of Michigan to close out her career as a Golden Bear.
Playing in the morning, the 48th-ranked Hauger lost, 6-1, 6-4, to Minor, who's ranked 50th. The Cal co-captain led 4-1 in the second set before the Wolverine – who won the 2017 NCAA singles title – rebounded to win the match.
In the afternoon, Rosenqvist – who liked Hauger was playing in her second consecutive NCAA singles tournament – converted five break points in a 6-0, 6-2 throttling of Central Florida's Valeriya Zeleva, who's ranked 40th. Rosenqvist, ranked 41st, will next play the 13th-ranked Anastasia Rychagova of Kansas at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Rychagova is also one of eight players seeded Nos. 9-12 in the tournament.
"It was exciting to get the tournament started," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We got here early to adjust to the weather and court conditions, and we felt we were prepared, which was great. In Olivia's match this morning, she went up against a tough opponent who won this tournament the last time she played in it. Olivia played well and fought hard. The second set was very tight. Unfortunately, things didn't go her way. As she always does, Olivia competed very hard and gave it everything she had.
"In Julia's match, we hadn't seen this opponent before. The game plan for Julia was to come out, play her game and really take it too this girl and she what she had. Julia did a good job of that. With this being Julia's second NCAA tournament, she's improved a lot since the same time last year. She focused really well, especially in the second set when her opponent made adjustments. Julia also served very well today."
Rosenqvist agreed that her experience in getting to and playing in last year's NCAA singles tournament – in which she lost in the first round – has helped this season.
"I've improved throughout my whole college career with how everything works, how to build up through the long season and get to the NCAAs at the end," she said. "In today's match I played pretty much the same to start. In the second set she made adjustments, but I adjusted back and had too many weapons for her.
"I'm really excited for singles and doubles tomorrow."
In Tuesday's opening round of 32 in the NCAA Doubles Championship, the Cal pair of Rosenqvist and
Hana Mraz – ranked 20th – will face N.C. State's seventh-ranked and Nos. 5-8-seeded Anna Rogers and Alana Smith at 3:30 p.m. ET.
