Two Bears Advance To NCAA Championship On Day One
Camryn Rogers and Silviu Bocancea Booked Spots At The NCAA Championship
SACRAMENTO -- Cal track and field saw two people qualify for the NCAA Championship and four more advance to the next round on the first day of action at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Thursday at Hornet Stadium.
After missing the NCAA Championship by one spot last year,
Camryn Rogers ensured that it wouldn't happen again. The sophomore threw 67.22m/220-6 on her second attempt in the women's hammer throw to win Thursday's competition and book a spot at the NCAA Championship in Austin. Overall, Rogers recorded the first, fourth and fifth-best throws of the day in her three attempts.
Silviu Bocancea qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year as he threw 67.43m/221-2 to finish in fourth place in the hammer throw competition. The senior opened up at 63.36/207-1 on his first throw, before bettering it on his second attempt. Bocancea's top mark bested his marks from last year's NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship, where he earned second-team All-America honors.
Zion Corrales Nelson set a personal best in the women's 100m dash to advance to Friday's quarterfinal. She ran 11.50 to record the fourth-fastest time in school history and claim the third automatic qualifying spot in her heat and 14th overall.
Paramveer Chohan advanced to the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.50. Chohan closed down the stretch to take third in his heat and 14
th overall to clinch a spot in tomorrow's quarterfinal.
Jasher Foster ran 52.70 to take 39
th overall.
Rebecca Croft and
Jordyn Colter both booked spots in the quarterfinals in the 800m. Colter ran 2:07.68 in the first heat as she took sixth place. With the top three places in each heat and the next six-best times advancing, Colter had to wait the duration to see if she qualified. She ended up qualifying with the 20
th overall time. Croft competed in the third heat and ran 2:07.63 as she took third place. Croft spent most of the race at the back of the pack, but made a surge over the final 200m and snuck along the inside rail to take third in her heat and grab an automatic qualifying spot with the 17th-best time.
Mina Anglero ran a season-best time in the 1500m as she finished the race in 4:21.34. The Norwegian international stuck with the top pack throughout the race, but wasn't able to win the sprint down the stretch. She finished seventh in her heat and 24th overall, but just missed advancing to the quarterfinals by .01 seconds.
Senior
Chrissy Glasmann finished out her collegiate career with a throw of 44.56m/146-2 as she took 27th place in the javelin competition. Glasmann's mark was the best she has thrown at a NCAA Regional in her career. She has qualified for four NCAA prelims, two while at Utah and two since transferring to Cal.
Senior
Paul Zeiss took 36th place with a time of 29:57.52 as he showcased his stamina over the second half of the 10,000m race. The race started slow as nobody pushed the pace, Zeiss was content to hang in the back of the 48-person field. He climbed the leaderboard throughout the final two miles in his first NCAA Prelims meet.
Garrett Corcoran finished in 47
th place in the men's 1500m. After getting injured midseason, Corcoran was not able to build up his fitness over the final meets heading into the NCAA prelims. This meet marked the end of a stellar career for Corcoran, which saw him become the first cross country runner in school history to qualify for the NCAA Championship four times.
Cal will be back in action on Friday at Hornet Stadium.
Kendall Mader will kick things off at noon as she competes in the women's discus. Track events will start at 4:30 for the Bears as
Deshae Wise competes in the first round of the 100m hurdles.
