Cal Track & Field Student-Athletes To Compete In Multiple Competitions This Summer
BERKELEY – Cal track & field will be represented around the world this summer, as the program will have seven student-athletes competing in international competition during the next two months.
Camryn Rogers,
Tuomas Kaukolahti,
Iffy Joyner,
Hakim McMorris,
Takeshi Okada,
Benjamin Micallef and
Mina Anglero will be competing in some of the toughest competitions the world has to offer.
Coming off of her NCAA championship in the hammer throw,
Camryn Rogers will return to the international stage for the first time since winning the U20 World Championships last summer. This summer, Rogers will turn her attention to two senior competitions; she will compete in the Canadian National Championships on July 25-28 in Montreal and the Pan American Games, which will take place from July 26-Aug. 11. Rogers is one of the favorites for the Canadian national title as she has recorded the best mark by any Canadian this year, when she threw 71.50m/234-7 at the NCAA Championships.
Tuomas Kaukolahti will also compete in two meets this summer. The Pac-12 champion and first-team All-American in the triple jump will compete in the World University Games from July 3-14 in Napoli, Italy. After that, the rising senior will return home to Finland to compete in the Finnish National Championships from Aug. 1-4 in Lappeenranta. Kaukolahti tied his personal best of 16.50m/54-1.75 at the NCAA Championships and ranks sixth in school history in the triple jump.
Hakim McMorris will be the first Bear to compete this summer as he will begin competition this coming weekend. McMorris will compete at the USATF U20 National Championships in Miramar, Florida. The championship runs June 21-23. McMorris enters as the top ranked athlete in the field. His personal best of 7,259 is just under 500 points better than the next best participant. McMorris tallied that mark at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships as he took second place. If McMorris finishes in the top two, he will qualify for and participate in the Pan American U20 Championships. That competition will take place July 19-21 in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Takeshi Okada will join Rogers and Kaukolahti in competing in his country's national championship. Okada will compete for the Japanese title from June 27-30 in the 3000m steeplechase. Okada graduated this past semester after posting the 10th-best mark in school history. Okada holds a personal best of 8:49.35, which he set at the Stanford Invitational earlier this year.
Mina Anglero and
Benjamin Micallef will both be headed to the European U23 Championships on July 11-14 in Gävle, Sweden. Micallef will compete for Malta in the 800m. The rising junior ran a Maltese National Record at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge this year as he ran 1:50.90. Anglero will be competing for Norway this summer. She made the finals of the Pac-12 Championships and qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in the 1500m this year. She also just missed one of the top-10 marks in school history as she ran 4:21.34 at the NCAA West Prelims.
Iffy Joyner will represent Team USA as he competes in the discus competition at the NACAC Championships. The U23 competition will feature athletes from all over North America, Central America and the Caribbean and take place in Mexico from July 5-8. Joyner set the redshirt freshman record this year as he threw 59.07m/193-9 at the Big Meet. He also took fifth place at the Pac-12 Championships and qualified for the NCAA Championships. He took 18th in Austin to earn honorable mention All-America honors.
