USA Tabs Former Bears For Olympic Qualifiers
BERKELEY – Former California men's soccer goalkeepers
Drake Callender and
Jonathan Klinsmann along with former signee Sebastian Soto were named to the United States' preliminary roster for the Concacaf Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Â
The U.S. will trim its preliminary list of 48 players to 20 no later than 10 days before the tournament. Qualifying will take place March 18-30 in Mexico and produce two representatives to compete in the Summer Olympics in Japan.
Â
Both erstwhile Cal goalies – and teammates – play professionally in Major League Soccer, with Callender a member of Inter Miami CF and Klinsmann back with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Callender, 23, played for Cal from 2016-19 and helped lead the Bears to the NCAA Tournament his senior season. Klinsmann, 23, played for the Bears from 2015-16 and went pro before his junior season.
Â
Klinsmann has extensive U.S. youth national team experience. He played in the 2017 Concacaf U-20 Championship – earning the golden glove as the best goalkeeper – and played in the subsequent FIFA U-20 World Cup. Callender trained with the U.S. U-23 national team in 2019.
Â
Soto, 20, signed with Cal in 2018 but joined Hannover 96, a professional club in Germany, instead. Now with Norwich City's U-23 team in England, Soto won the Concacaf U-20 Championship with the U.S. in 2018.
