Three Bears Score In Double Overtime Loss To UCLA

By: Cal Athletics

LOS ANGELES - The Golden Bears brought the energy in a 4-3 double-overtime loss to UCLA for the last game of the regular season. A tremendous California team effort earned eight points off of three goals and two assists. The Bears drop to a 4-5-1 overall record (and 4-5-1 in the Pac-12) to finish fourth overall in the conference standings.

Evan Davila was the first to test the UCLA goalkeeper with two shots-on-goal in the eighth and 13th minutes. In the 22nd minute, Jonathan Estrada set the play with a cross to Alonzo Del Mundo, who then pushed the ball to the arc for JJ Foe Nuphaus to finish for a 1-0 lead.

UCLA found an equalizer just five minutes later when Riley Ferch shot the ball past Cal keeper Collin Travasos. In the 34th minute, Ferch earned an assist on a Grayson Doody goal to bring the Bruins to a 2-1 lead.

Just a minute later, Fahmi Ibrahim struck a rebound goal off the feet of two defenders to tie the game once again, 2-2.

Cal took early control in the second half when Francisco Perez fired a shot at the top of the box that went high. A free-kick opportunity in the 65th minute allowed Del Mundo to send a cross inside the box that the Bruins' deflected to Jack Singer. Singer struck the ball to the back left of the net earning the Bears a 3-2 lead with his first career goal.

The Bruins picked up the pace and outshot the Bears 5-1 for the remaining 25 minutes of regulation. In the 85th minute, UCLA found the space to score and send the game to overtime.

Christian Gomez took the first shot of the overtime period in the 91st minute, but the ball went wide. Neither team could find the golden goal, and it became a double-overtime game in Westwood. Davila took the lone Cal shot of the double-overtime period but was blocked by Bruin defenders. With 90 seconds remaining, UCLA's Doody hit the woodwork to send both teams on a shuffle for the ball. Before the Bears could tame the ball, Tommy Silva bounced the ball in off the left post for a Bruins' golden goal.

Cal now and awaits its postseason fate on Monday. The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Selection Show will take place April 19 at 12 p.m. eastern time on NCAA.com.
