2022 Cameron Institute Leadership Showcase Talk
Fall 2021: An Athletic Study Center Scholar-Athlete of the Week during the fall, Gomez – lauded for his leadership skills with the Bears and the greater UC Berkeley community – spoke at the Cameron Institute Leadership Showcase, a Ted Talk-style event that features student-athletes who have demonstrated significant leadership in school, sport, and life and were nominated by their peers, coaches, and staff…on the field, he started 11 of 13 games played…in a memorable game on Oct. 16 at Santa Clara, with Cal trailing 3-2, Gomez assisted on an 85th-minute Nate Carrasco goal that eventually resulted in a 3-3, double-overtime tie with the Broncos.
Spring 2021: Fifteen months after the 2019 season ended, Gomez scored Cal’s first goal of the truncated spring 2021 regular season…his 50th-minute strike gave Cal a 1-1 tie with Stanford in the season opener, though the Bears wound up falling, 3-1…was named the Athletic Study Center’s Scholar-Athlete of the Week, as Gomez – a peer advisor for the ASC’s Scholar-Athlete Freshman Transition Seminars – was recognized for challenging his peers to view obstacles as opportunities for growth and to embrace a mindset of “thinking outside the box” during their Cal journeys.
2019: Overcame a broken leg the previous year to play in a career-high 16 games, starting three…his recovery from injury was chronicled in this Inside the Lair feature on CalBears.com:
The New Christian Gomez...he recorded his first point for the Bears with an assist on a Jonathan Estrada goal in a 3-3 tie at UCLA on Oct. 13...also combined with Simon Lekressner to set up Alonzo Del Mundo’s gamewinning goal in a 3-2 upset of No. 1 Washington in Seattle…Gomez netted his first collegiate goal in the 39th minute of Cal’s 3-1 loss at UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 21 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
2018: Played in the first three matches of the season before suffering a broken leg that sidelined him the rest of the year.
Personal/Previous: Global studies major...played for Pateadores Academy...played for El Salvador's U17 National Team in the UNCAF Championships and CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers and U18 Team in Olympic qualifiers...led U19 Pateadores Academy to the USSDA Southwest Conference Championship.
