Cal Beats Saint Mary’s 4-2

BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's 4-2 on Tuesday at Edwards Stadium in its penultimate home match of the regular season. The Golden Bears had goals from four different players – Nonso Adimabua, Arik Duncan, Allan Juarez and Rohan McEligot – as they rebounded from a setback in their last game on the road.

"We were determined to come out here and just be very result-driven today," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "We've been preaching about being good in both boxes. Today we were good in our attacking box. I was extremely proud of the group and the opportunities we created."

The Bears improved their record to 5-6-2 after the nonconference match. Saint Mary's fell to 1-7-5.

Cal, which fell at Portland last Friday 2-0, got its first goal from Adimabua in the 37th minute. Juarez played the ball to Gaku Nishimura in the Gaels' box, and on Nishimura's attempted shot, the ball wound up with Adimabua deeper in the box. The 6-4 forward turned and fired the ball into the net to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

In the 50th minute, Cal co-captain Kevin Carmichael took a free kick that skimmed off the head of forward Malcolm Zalayet and ended up with Duncan about 20 yards from the Gaels' goal. Cal's other 6-4 forward turned and fired a looping shot that ended up in the net to make the score 2-0.

Junior midfielder Allan Juarez netted his first goal as a Bear in the 52nd minute – off an Adrian Guzman assist – to give Cal a 3-0 lead.

After Justin Sosa scored for Saint Mary's to make the score 3-1 in the 62nd minute, McEligot gave the Bears a 4-1 lead in the 66th minute, collecting a Santiago Hopkins cross just above the six-yard box and burying the ball in the back of the net.

In the 86th minute, Saint Mary's was awarded a penalty kick, which the Gaels' Jack Vestberg converted to make the final score 4-2.

Cal next hosts Notre Dame on Sunday at 3 p.m. PT in the Bears' last home game of the regular-season. The Bears will honor their seniors before the game during the Senior Day ceremony.
