Cal Ends Home Slate Vs. Gaels, Irish

After two eventful road games, the California men's soccer team (4-6-2, 1-3-2 ACC) returns to Berkeley for its last two home games of the regular season, hosting Saint Mary's in a nonconference game Tuesday and Notre Dame in an ACC match Sunday at Edwards Stadium. Before the game against the Irish, Cal will honor its senior student-athletes in its Senior Day ceremony.
Here are the details for the two games:
Vs. Saint Mary's (1-6-5)
When: Tuesday, Oct. 22, 3 p.m. PT

Cal Loses 2-0 At Portland
Cal could not sustain the success of its previous road game Friday night in Portland, where the Golden Bears lost to the Pilots 2-0 at Merlo Field. Cal – which upset then-No. 1 Pitt on Oct. 11 in Pennsylvania – saw its record fall to 4-6-2.
Cal looked to be on the front foot in the second half, outshooting Portland 8-4 before the first goal. In one sequence after a Cal corner kick in the 51st minute, the Bears were stymied after three good chances – a Kevin Carmichael shot from seven yards that was blocked, a Malcolm Zalayet shot from eight yards that was blocked and a Giancarlo Mota shot from the top of the box that Portland goalkeeper Kash Oladapo saved.
The Pilots took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute when Joe Highfield headed in a cross by Diego Rosas, with Sebastian Nava also earning an assist. Ten minutes later, Umar scored off another Nava assist to make the Cal deficit 2-0. Neither team recorded a shot the rest of the way.
Adimabua, Brougher Named ACC Players of the Week
After leading Cal to its 1-0 upset of then-No. 1 Pitt and its first ACC victory Oct. 11, forward Nonso Adimabua was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and goalkeeper Marco Brougher was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week. Brougher was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for his performance against the Panthers.
Those were the first ACC weekly honors for Cal in men's soccer.
The goal sequence began when the Panthers played the ball back to their goalkeeper, Cabral Carter, deep in their box. With Cal forward Arik Duncan pressuring him, Carter passed the ball to a Pitt field player. The Panther took a bad touch in the box to leave the ball in the path of the onrushing Adimabua, who slammed the ball into the net from 14 yards out.
Brougher made a career-best seven saves, including the stop of Luis Sahmkow's penalty kick. The Panthers' leading scorer had previously made two of two penalty kicks this season, but the Cal goalie made a diving save of the spot kick and two minutes later saved an Eben McIntyre shot in what was Pitt's last chance of the game to earn his third shutout of 2024.

Cal ends the regular season at Stanford on Nov. 1 and then competes in the ACC Championship starting Nov. 6.

- Marco Brougher, a junior goalkeeper who's started all 12 games, is among the ACC leaders in several categories – he's No. 1 in saves per game (3.67) and is, tied for the lead in saves (44), shutouts combined (1), and shutouts combined per game (0.08). Brougher is also tied for third in save percentage (0.746) and is seventh in shutouts (3).
- As a team, Cal leads the ACC in saves (53)
- Senior forwards Nonso Adimabua and Arik Duncan are tied for the Cal lead in points (8) and goals (3)
- Freshman forward Malcolm Zalayet leads the Bears in assists (3)
- Adimabua, Zalayet, sophomore midfielder Justin Knighton and sophomore defender Giancarlo Mota have each scored one game-winning goal
- Adimabua, a member of the All-Pac-12 Second Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region Third Team last year, is playing in his fifth season, with his career including two previous years at Cal (2022, 2023) and two seasons at San Francisco (spring 2021, fall 2021)
- Cal head coach Leonard Griffin coached Adimabua in the spring of 2021 when both were at San Francisco
- Cal's 5-0 rout of Dominican on Sept. 16 in Berkeley is the only game so far in which any Bear besides Brougher played in goal this season (Thomas Grimes and Ryan Savoie)
- Senior defender Kevin Carmichael and senior midfielder/defender Wyatt Meyer – both All-Pac-12 First-Team selections last season and draft picks by Nashville SC in the MLS SuperDraft last December – are co-captains in their final season at Cal
- Carmichael, who was chosen to the ACC Preseason Watch List, was profiled in Seizing The Opportunity, a Cal Sports Quarterly magazine feature
- Meyer – the 2023 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and a member of the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region Second Team – was named to the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch List for defenders and garnered a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI Team this fall
- Leonard Griffin – who won the NCAA championship as a UCLA player in 2002 – was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year last season and is in his third year as head coach of the Golden Bears
- A former professional player who was drafted No. 11 overall by the Chicago Fire in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, Griffin made MLS stops in Portland, Oregon, in Columbus, Ohio, and in Los Angeles with the Galaxy
- The Cal coaching staff includes alumnus and long-time assistant coach Henry Foulk, who has mentored numerous Bears who've played professionally including current pros Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders FC, MLS), Drake Callender (Inter Miami CF, MLS), David Bingham (Charlotte FC, MLS) and Jonathan Klinsmann (Cesena FC, Italy Serie C)
Scouting Saint Mary's
- The Gaels tied the Broncos 0-0 at Santa Clara on Saturday in their last game
- Saint Mary's' lone win was a 2-0 result over Cal Poly on Aug. 25 in its second game of the season
- Midfielder Bastian Toelhoej leads Saint Mary's in goals (3) and points (7)
- Defender Luke Lawrence paces the Gaels in assists (2)
- Goalkeeper Sam Bentley has a 2.00 GAA and a 0.654 save percentage in nine starts
- Adam Cooper is in his 19th season as head coach of the Gaels
- The Irish host Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday before traveling on a one-game trip to the West Coast
- In its last game, Notre Dame tied Boston College 1-1 on Friday at home
- Forward Matthew Roou leads the Irish in points (24), goals (12), game-winning goals (3) and converted penalty kicks (3 of 3)
- Midfielder Bryce Boneau paces Notre Dame in assists (7)
- In 12 games, goalkeeper Blake Kelly has a 1.17 GAA and a 0.650 save percentage
- Former Bear Collin Travasos – who was at Cal from 2019-22 – is a graduate student and reserve goalkeeper for the Irish who's played in one game this season
