BERKELEY - The No. 23 California Golden Bears (5-4) defeated UC Davis 7-0, while suffering a loss to No. 14 UCLA 4-3 at Hellman Tennis Complex on Sunday. 

To begin the day, Cal took a 1-0 lead over the Bruins after wins on doubles courts one and two. On court two, Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski and Andrea Meduri won 6-3, while teammates Tiago Silva and Timofey Stepanov clinched the doubles point with a 7-6(3) victory.

In singles play, Cal extended its lead to two after Paris Pouatcha defeated Cassius Chinlund 6-3, 6-4 on court six. The Bears then suffered three straight defeats on courts one, two and four, giving the Bruins the lead. Sophomore Bernardo Munk Mesa tied the match at 3-3, with a win on court five. However, the Bruins closed out the match with a 4-3 win as the Bears suffered another defeat on court three.

In the afternoon, Cal took another 1-0 lead after wins on courts one and three against UC Davis. On court one, Silva and Stepanov posted a 6-3 victory, while teammates Alex Aney and Leonardo Cattaneo clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win.

In singles play against the Aggies, Munk Mesa gave the Bears their second point of the match with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory on court four. Next, Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski extended the Bears' lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two. Finally, on court six, Winston Lee won 6-1, 6-0 to secure a victory for the Golden Bears. 

Despite the match already clinched, Silva, Pouatcha and Meduri each picked up victories. Andrea Meduri's win on court three was his first collegiate singles win. 

Next: The Bears will face the University of San Diego in San Diego on Sunday.
