Biography

Spring 2020: Completed his final season as a Golden Bear with a 12-4 singles record and a 1-2 doubles mark…won 11 of his last 12 completed singles matches as a senior, including a 6-2, 6-1 victory over San Francisco’s Johan Garpered that clinched Cal’s win over the Dons…finished with career records of 48-29 in singles and 32-20 in doubles.

Fall 2019: The veteran Bear was 11-4 in singles and 1-2 in doubles in the first half of the year…he captured the top-flight singles title at the UCSB Classic, winning four matches and ultimately defeating Stanford’s Neel Rajesh, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, in the championship final…Barretto had a strong singles run in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, winning three matches to advance to the round of 16…he won three straight in singles at Harvard’s Chowder Fest in Boston to close out the fall.

Spring 2019: Completed his third season with an 11-9 singles record (including a 4-2 court-six record) and 9-5 doubles record…against Nevada on March 24, he teamed with Bjorn Hoffmann to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Dylan Levitt and Benjamin Campi and later clinched the overall, 4-0 victory with a 6-1, 7-5 result over Gvidas Motuzas at court-six singles.
 
Fall 2018: Was 7-7 in singles and 6-4 in doubles in the fall…partnered with Mert Zincirli to win the doubles title at the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis…the two Bears beat Stanford’s second-seeded Sangeet Sridhar and Tomas Kopczynski, 8-3, in the final.…Barretto won three straight to reach the singles semifinals at the Aggie Invitational.

Spring 2018: Finished 13-6 in singles and 13-18 in doubles in his sophomore season…won his first two singles matches of the spring, beating Philip Belmatch, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch a 6-1 win over Bryant and defeating Tulsa’s Mitchell Pritchard, 6-4, 6-1…was 2-2 in dual-match play…also won his first two doubles matches of the spring, as he paired with Paul Barretto, his brother, to defeat Belmatch and Grant Pertile, 6-2, (and clinch the doubles point vs. Bryant) and then beat Tulsa’s Lucca Baptista and Boriss Kamdem, 6-2…teamed primarily with Can Kaya in the dual-match season, with the pair posting a 6-7 record overall (5-6 in dual matches).

Fall 2017: Posted 11-4 singles and 5-6 doubles records…advanced to the singles round of 16 in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, beat Nevada’s Jeremy Merville, 6-2, 6-2, to win the B singles title at the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis, and reached the singles semifinals at the UCSB Classic…reached the doubles quarterfinals at regionals and in the Battle in the Bay Classic with teammate and younger brother Paul Barretto.

Spring 2017: Finished his first collegiate season with a 12-10 singles record and 9-5 doubles record…he notched his first dual-match clinching win against San Diego, as he beat Alexandros Araouzos, 6-3, 7-5, at court-six singles in an eventual 6-1 win over the Toreros…was 5-0 in doubles in dual matches, posting 2-0 records when paired with Filip Bergevi and with Florian Lakat and a 1-0 record with Bjorn Hoffmann.

Fall 2016: Ended his first semester at Cal with an 11-5 singles record…reached the finals of his second tournament as a Bear at the Aggie Invitational, falling to Eli Whittle of host UC Davis, 7-6(5), 6-2…reached the singles round of 64 at the 2016 ITA Northwest Regional Championships, falling to Eastern Washington’s Robert Dula, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5…posted two wins at the UCSB Classic…won his flight at the Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational, beating Everett Maltby of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-2 in the final…posted a 4-5 doubles record…reached the round of 32 at the 2016 Regionals partnering Gunther Matta.

Personal: Political science major… Barretto played for Redwood High School in freshman and sophomore years, earning many accolades including winning MCAL and NCS doubles and individual championships in his freshman year… won MCAL and NCS doubles championship with younger brother (Paul) in his sophomore year of high school play…became first player in NCS to win doubles championships 2 years in a row…Paul Barretto is also on the Cal squad... Marco, his older brother, played for the University of San Francisco team…dad Eddie Barretto played tennis at USF and on the pro tour… mother Ana Barretto is a nurse…Barretto’s hobbies include basketball and ping-pong…post-graduate goals are to play on the tour, but also to stay in the Bay Area close to his family.
